Greatest Hits?
By Ahchay

The Best Mario Kart In The World... Ever!

Going down...

It's kind of fitting that, due to the normal Rodent delays, this game should land during our Emulation Issue - we're in Greatest Hits territory here. Everything you have ever loved, and loathed, about Mario Kart is here.

So were you one of the original SNES 'golden era' karters? You'll love the tight turns, the nearly-hidden boost options and time trial purity.

Spot the difference

Maybe you were were one ofthe N64 revivalists - where it was all about reimagining Mario's world in glorious 3D, you'll love it too as Mario and chums each bring their own unique style to the proceedings.

Or were you one of the Double-Dash apologists? It's not so much about the racing any more, so long as everyone gets a chance to have fun.

See, all of these are catered for in Mario Kart Wii - it is all things to all people. If you want instant pick-up-and-play appeal that you might need to get your Auntie Eileen to have a go, then you have that. If you want the technical challenge of posting that sub 1:37 time, then the online leaderboards will sit there, mocking your efforts and if you covet evil use of blue shells and the occasional sneaky win then that's there too.

But is that enough?

For those of you who have loved Mario Kart in the past, then what we have here is the perfect summation of the series to date - you might just have to pick and choose to find the bits that appeal. Whether there's enough new here is going to depend entirely on how much you love Mario Kart and, perhaps, how long you've been away.

But if, by some miracle, this is your first time Karting with Mario, then what you're getting is The Greatest Mario Kart Tracks In The World... Ever!

It is exactly like those bands who release Greatest Hits albums every three years, with a couple of 'exclusive' new tracks each time for the completists. Not neccessarily a bad thing, but how often can these tracks be recycled, ressucitated and regurgitated before they lose all their power completely?
