They Were Our Gods
  • Fuck it, let's give this a go:

  • (You'll have to copy the URL though because of the fucking amazing way Vanilla deals with links or something).
  • Cool article :)
  • Fucking hell, that used to work fine. Maybe I screwed it up somehow.

    They Were Our Gods

  • Great stuff... all power to yer elbow.
  • I'd buy it.
  • Sounds great Paul, best of luck fella.
  • Great idea! Keep up the good work.
  • It'll take a lot of time and effort, but I'm up for it... could be what I've been working up to until now.
  • Looking forward to following your progress on this. I was an Atari 800 man, rather than c64/spectrum, back in those days but I love reading about all sorts of retro stuff, so I'm sure there'll be plenty of interest. Good luck.
  • Yeah, the Atari 800 was a much smaller part of that era in the UK. That doesn't mean I would completely rule it out though.

Day 2 - is size everything?
  • Great evocative title that.
  • If you want box shots, then I've got stacks of games here to help heh. I did supply quite a few for Andrew's C64 book...
  • 'box shots.' Heh.
  • @paul, one of my university mates was the first person I knew that got full time into the games industry. His name is Dave Worral, he started out with Red Rat software and wrote Lombard RAC Rally for st and Amiga, he then went on to psygnosis where he worked on stuff including I think leading Carthage. After that I think he may have been at dma design but it gets hazy.

He's one of my contacts on LinkedIn or Facebook I can try and get in touch with him for you when you're ready if you like.

I was involved with red rat from their early days while I was at uni between 84 and 87 and I guess Dave was involved from 87 ish onwards.
  • I don't have the boxes anymore but I have kept all of the original instructions and other great stuff that came in Amiga boxes - so if you want some different images to do with the "goodies" that came in boxes I can supply that as needed.
  • I've got some st and Amiga boxes, also full c&vg till about issue 200 and assorted us Atari mags if they're of use for research etc.
  • John, what games did you write again for the Atari 8 bit?
  • Nothing worth mentioning for the 8bit, a basic conversion called rocket repairman (that had awesome sf artwork by a famous book illustrator called Eddie Jones, who bog knows of and was well impressed) and a mini games collection type game called Forbidden Island I think (so bad I can't remember). I actually did all the tape and disk loaders for red rat though and prepared everything to go to the duplicators.

I did do a better game for ST and Amiga called Timerunner, which looking back wasn't ace but it wasn't as crap as the others, it was kind of an 8bit game with better gfx just as proper 16bit games got started.

But I was still part of it all in my own small way :)

  • Ahhh, it's good to know I can already count on people if necessary. Cheers, guys, I'll be in touch if or as and when.
  • My Twitter account for They Were Our Gods is being followed by Angie Brown, singer of Bizarre, Inc.

    Bizarre, indeed.
  • She followed, or requested to follow me even, a while ago. Denied.
  • A wise move by you, methinks.

I've put another post up, although it basically says nothing: Day 4 - best laid plans. I've also put up a two-question "either/or" poll, just out of curiosity, really.
  • Just caught up with this thread and it sounds fantastic, best of luck Paul!
  • Thanks, I suspect I'll need it!

    Day 5 - Game on!
  • Look forward to following this Paul, it's a huge undertaking and will require a lot of effort but I'm sure you're well up for the job.
  • I hope so mate, or I'll end up looking a bit daft! I just felt I had to give it a go, and now was the time.
  • I'm just putting ideas down at the moment, I think it's worthwhile to do that.

    What characters!
  • I've created a Facebook page for this now. There's not much there now, but I'll be posting all my updates there, too (if it lets me... posting seems a bit iffy but I'm sure I'll work it out).

Oh, the link: Facebook - They Were Our Gods

I used to work with a guy who had a few games published by RedRat - Ivan Macintosh, who wrote (that I remember) Crumbles Crisis, Rebound, Black Lamp and Space Lobsters.

Haven't seen him for about 25 years, I wonder what he's up to these days.
  • haha chrs, small world, Time Runner on the ST/Amiga was a kind of sequel to Crumbles Crisis. I'm not sure but I think I might have been introduced to Ivan Macintosh at a computer show once.
  • Day 7 - if you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail

Again, just throwing stuff out there for now.
  • Just had someone offer to be interviewed for this. My first one! Hopefully the rest will be as easy to get hold of...
  • Elite... or Elite?

If anyone thinks these little daily updates are pointless, give me a shout, by the way...
  • Paul, I'm enjoying reading these little bite-sized tasters.
  • Brilliant. An e-mail I sent out yesterday has received a very nice reply, and promised to give me some info for this. I guess I need to think of some good questions besides asking about the bloke's games...

  • Love reading these Paul, keep it up!
  • That's the plan! I'm writing out my first set of questions now...
  • Wow, that took ages to write! Hope it doesn't put him off!
  • Paul, when you're ready to interview someone who was a kid in America when all of this was going on over seas, and had no idea that anyone outside the US even new what a computer was, well then I'm your man!

Seriously though, this will be a nice read.. good luck man.
  • Haha!

I'm getting a feeling from various places that they want to see a book like this... I think our bedroom programmers, who came up with so many imaginative games on our 8-bit computers, have not had the recognition they deserved. There could be a nice little niche for this, here's hoping.

Got another little quickie: Day 10 - first contact
  • Just sent out an e-mail to another potential subject. Anyone got any generic questions they'd like me to ask our Gods?
  • How do they feel about the adulation they still receive from certain quarters for something they did some 30 years ago?
  • Dunno yet... the first one is going to answer my massive e-mail when he's got time. Hope I didn't scare him off, it was huge! I've literally just sent off the first e-mail to my second subject. The difficulty is going to come with the ones that don't have any kind of public e-mail or contact details readily available... which is most of them...

Howdy, Stranger!
