Ahh... good area mate! The Official 2012 Cricket Thread.
  • Saffers looking proper strong against the Austroolainians today.

  • Is Rodent Cricket a good idea?
  • Not really but it's fucking hilarious to watch.

    Oh you mean us lot.

Well if anybody fancied it, my brother's team will happily play us in the summer.
  • Ooh harsh - both Saffer openers have had to 'retire hurt' in order to give other players a go. Ouch.

As long at it's a no time limit Test Match I'm in.

  • Yeah, if I'm allowed to bowl I might do the first 40-ball over, especially if I try to get the leg-breaks out. When I last tried those in the back yard about one in three went on the roof of the shed.
  • One of my favourite Rodent memories is russ showing increasing displeasure every time Rocky and Rich did their Australian "aww yeeeeh" in Brighton.
  • awww yeeeeeeee - baaawled shane. aww yeeeeeeee

I used to be a pretty good leg-spinner. Needed to bowl on grass, though... if we snuck onto the school's flat, dry wicket, my mates would just slog me for miles.
  • I've never actually bowled on a full-size pitch, but mucking about in the yard I seem to have an OK, if sometimes inaccurate, off-spinner and a bit of medium pace.

I suspect if I'd played a bit more I'd fall into the category of 'Mr. Try Anything Once': for those who've not read the wonderful Rain Men, this is the bloke who mixes up medium pace, cutters, slower balls, leg breaks, off breaks, flippers, sliders and zooters, all bowled with a massive grin as if to say "Guess what's coming next?" The answer being, invariably, a slow full toss...
  • Sign me up.

Bowls: Fiery inaccurate slow/medium pace with an occasional split finger slow ball that defies the laws of physics in still travelling forwards at a pace that looks like backwards.

Bat: Block, block, block, think about a straight drive aaaaaaand block, block, bowled slogging to leg, smash stumps down in fury, trudge off.
  • Bowls: attempted fast leg side beamers.
    Bats: and bats.
  • The only batting experience I can remember is non-stop cricket. I was last man in, my reputation preceding me, and we hadn't even reached half the 50 or so we'd been set. Somehow, despite my fabled ineptitude, I managed to collect the lot, aided greatly by how much the opposition was laughing after about the tenth one had smashed off the ceiling at 100mph.

I suspect the games teacher (who was bowling) may have been giving me easy ones.
  • Hello there!
Bowls: Swings a bit on a good day. Trys to reach medium pace but tends to go to shit when nearing those speeds.
Bats: Poorly but constantly improving. Loves a legside sweep or hook, as long as there's not a risk of the ball hitting him (the big poof).

Should make it to my first nets session of the year at the end of the month so we'll see how much I've forgotten over the break.

View from my hotel room at the Old Trafford Cricket ground, pity I hate cricket.
  • Lovely, what you up to in Manchester? You're just round the corner from Nik there.
  • 370? That all you got India?

    Blimey
  • This isn't looking very smooth so far?
  • They're our bogey team.
  • ten Doeschate would walk into any ODI team in the world, I reckon. Class act with the bat and he can bowl a bit as well. We'll never really know, but there's a chance he could have been one of the truly great all-rounders.
  • : "Mike Yardy would be a battered family estate car, with a 'My other car is a Ferarri' sticker on the back. You'd drive him most places, but take your other car out for special occasions, for example, a World Cup."

    Brilliant.
  • Very tatty in the field today - they simply don't look like they want to be there. Still look knackered from the lengthy Oz tour
  • England need to do the job with the bat now. Smash the Dutchies over the off side.
  • I reckon we'll be all out for less than 220.
  • I'll be very dissapointed if the BBC web don't make some sort of passing the dutchie 'pon off/leg side quip.
  • Squeaky bum time again...
  • Hello Mr. Bopara.
  • Awww yeeeeeeeh. Easy. Balls to spare.
  • Good sudden burst there at the end.
  • holland! holland!
  • Tell you what, if that had been Pakistan bowling rather than England then we'd all be calling for an investigation into betting irregularities. Awful. Village cricket.
  • This Ponting lad has a bit of a temper on him.
  • Imran Tahir is making a very impressive debut for South Africa here. Remains to be seen whether he goes the way of Mendis (where the hell is he?) but the signs look ominous.
  • Tense times tomorrow then, going to have to be at the top of our game methinks. Hopefully the Dutch were a wakeup call.

In other news, nets session tomorrow, it will be interesting.

  • I caught some of the Five Live commentary today and I must just say how wonderful it is as a lover of the language hearing an Australian commentating on Sri Lanka games - those wonderful complex names seem to really fit with the Aussie drawl.

In related news, who'd have thought that with Sri Lanka in the tournament the least pronouncable name would be a dutchman?
  • Blimey, that does not look like a strong England side out there today. Lets hope they turn out to be more than the sum of their parts.
  • We can chase 400 I reckon, no problem at all.

    Ouch
  • We're going to lose by miles, but what a ball from Swann!
  • Hmm, could have been a lot worse, although the wicket rate suggests India have paced themselves well.
  • Even easier, we need 60 less than I thought. In the bag.
  • I take my well paced comment back. 7/32 apparently.
  • Fucking hell, all that hard work then throw it away in the last few overs :(
  • We're fucked.
  • SWANNY!!!
  • I think I might be watching the highlights to that later... thankfully on after MotD...
  • Devastated that I wasn't in the pub for that game. What a game of cricket
  • Cor. Was halfway to Brighton and nearly stuffed it when Shazam hit that six. I mean, wow.
  • Hmmm, the oirish putting up a good chase so far...
    Edit: Hold that thought :)

  • Fuck me, how scary was that aircraft noise just now? The radio is in the other room and even then it was a huge noise. Horrible moment.
  • In the office at the moment so not listening. Once I get into the lab I'll switch it on.

Howdy, Stranger!
