Formula One 2012
  • Ello Darlings

Its that time of year when the engines get revved and the new cars get unveiled, I dont know about you but this years crop of cars have ALL been hit with ugly stick, well, except for McLaren, who's car looks pretty enough and hopefully fast enough to win the championship this year.

Over to you, whats your take on the cars, the drivers and the madness that is going to be half the races on BBC HD :)

    TGG
  • Well, for starters the Beeb have signed up Ben Edwards as commentator. The is the best news in ages.
  • You're not wrong about the ugly stick. As my nephew put it, they look like someone's eaten too many pies and sat on the front end..... what's Scrote been up to recently?
  • It's merely bad on the black cars, but particularly awful on the Ferrari. The extra intake on the Red Bull doesn't look so bad though.
  • It'll look better after Massa 'rearranges' it against Hamilton's car in practice, quali and race in Melbourne.

  • @SPG thats a good thing, but to still only have half the races is silly.

    @DrWoo :) hehe

@Dio I cant believe how ugly the RedBull looks and Newey is supposed to be "the" designer of pretty cars, do McLaren know something the others dont??????

Testing tomoro where we see whats what.

    TGG

  • @woo
    Keyunt. ;)

Really looking forward to the new season, really hoping that Mercedes and Schuey have something special this year and are holding back the new car for the second test because it's a rocket ship.

Schuey bagging a win or two this year would be ace. Sustaining a title bid would be a dream come true. I'm hopeful that this year will be a real ding dong battle between 4-5 drivers, don't really think that Vettel is going to massively dominate again.

Last prediction is that Button is going to score more than Hamilton again this year.
  • Looking forward to seeing what Ricciardo can do in a better car this year, after being heralded as the next big thing it was a shame to see him limping round last year in that milkfloat of an HRT car
  • Kimi fastest on Day one of testing at Jerez.

Really looking forward to the start of the season.
  • @morgan :) I wouldnt read too much into the testing times at Jerez :) last year Williams were the fastest in testing and look how their season turned out :)

The new cars stick look like they have been hit with the ugly stick, however, they are now twittering that the McLaren may be protested at for its exhaust or more correctly the apparent ducting on the bodywork directing the air to the rear tyres.
  • Not reading into them at all, just a friendly link :-)

I've not seen the cars properly yet, I must go and do that actually.
  • This builds the anticipation for F1 2012 nicely, 5 minute edit of Sky's teaser promo for their F1 offering.

I know it's Sky, but don't worry about that for the next few minutes, just turn up the volume.

  • Nice to see a racing advert without a single car crash on it, the guys from Indy and Nascar may learn something here.
  • I'm really not interested any more. I gave up half way through last season, and this split-on-Sky thing just completely ruins it.
  • Not a bad advert, however, I will be watching the german coverage of the F1 season this year, as we refuse to give murdoch our money and I dont wanna watch half a season.

  • I gave in and got sky when we moved in, even though I really wanted to go the FreeSat route. Going to upgrade for the F1 next month.

Although I will be keeping an eye on this thread because if people have no problems watching via other sources then we'll bounce the sky out in Dec when the contract runs out.
  • Clever clever Sky have sent us a mail shot with a great deal to sign up before the Grand Prix season starts. Free box and installation chucked in as well, we're signing up this weekend......

I'm getting "sucker" tattoo'd on my forehead next
  • @Gorilla_Biscuit You do know you dont have to do that dont you, we are getting a satellite dish kit from B&Q and pointing it as 19.2e to get the german coverage with 5live radio for commentary :)
  • I'm looking forward to the Sky coverage. An entire HD channel dedicated to F1. Also streamed to iOS devices. Should be cool.

    This

It's a convenient excuse to get Sky for me to be honest, I'll probably use the BBC HD channel for those races that they've got because their coverage over the past few years has been excellent.

  • BBC for me, can't justify the extra cost for F1 having to Sky onto our Virgin Media package.

  • If anybody wanna join, we created a Rodent League on www.f1manager.info, just go there and search for "Rodentsliga"!
  • @WadeGarrett well i think i joined but its not the best UI so cant be sure..........

  • I think I've joined it as well, maybe it's me but I don't see how you can have even one really good pick for any of the four selections. The budget cap is too low. You can't actually choose for example Vettel because he costs 55 mill. The cheapest other driver is about 20mill and the cheapest chassis and engine cost about 20-22 mill each. The total you can spend is 100mill so how can you have Vettel in anybodies team?

It's quite broken. I think I've chosen a mediocre collection but with such little scope to assemble a team I suspect there's an awful of people have got exactly the same because of the flawed system.
  • Welcome aboard! We have played F1 Manager on other seasons too. Don't go for a "balanced" team, the best thing to do on the start is to spend most money on a better engine or chassis, because they have twice the chance to score than a driver. You really start low on cash, but the rewards are fine so that with one or two good races you can already start to improve your team. The UI is really strange this year, don't know why they changed it because the last one was really nice.

  • The new Sky channel is up (408 and 459 HD), just playing looping vids at the moment.
  • Lying scoundrels, they said the 9th!
  • I'm gonna try and find a dodgy stream of it on the net. I already pay for BBC and Sky. I'm not bending over and paying more.
  • It's free on Sky isn't it, or haven't you got the HD package?

Brundell is getting on my tits already
  • No just standard Sky+ and no sports package.
  • There's bound to be feeds available, and they'll be pulled down left right and centre I reckon as Bernie's spies get wind of them
  • I'll be using my cheapo satellite at astra 19.2e and the german RTL channel :)
  • And by God the box is cheapo, must get the dish swung around from 13e before Sunday.
  • Don't have Sky Sports this year, which is annoying give the timezone for this race is pretty much ours.

Luckily will be down the pub getting hammered tonight for Paddy's day and hopefully qualifying will be on the TAB screens if not on the main pub screen (band playing tonight so won't get commentary though)
  • Up yours Sky :)

    Up yours Sky
  • Sky's coverage is fantastic, we've watched some practice sessions and all of qualifying today and it's all really well done

Damon Hill and David Croft are good choices, once they can get a word in edgeways with Brundell that is!

  • I agree, really impressed with the coverage. Davidson is brilliant and I'd prefer to see him paired up with Brundell.

Of course, the downside is that I am also watching the BBC coverage later as they are doing different interviews etc with the drivers.

Without blabbing any results in case others still haven't seen the qualy, looks like a really exciting race is on the cards.
  • BBC Highlights of the Quali were fine. There a few people commenting on another forum about the fact that there was no mention of the Red Flag whilst they moved Alonso's care. Yeah because that's why I watch Qualifying to see some cranes and marshalls.

I'm not paying for Sky I don't have a Satellite dish so this'll do for me. To be honest the BBC coverage is massively padded with non-racing so 10 races being highlights is fine from a finding the time to watch it all.

Who else is enjoying Ferrari being a bit shit? :-)

Go Hammy and Button! It'd be nice to see Schumacher on the Podium as well.
  • Somebody needs to have a word with David Croft and remind him that he's commentating on TV and not radio this year, it isn't entirely necessary to describe everything, I have got a pair of eyes and can see things too!
  • Massa's gonna get sacked.

That's what you get for having Sky :-)

Another lockout at the front for the Maccas. Can Hamilton make a better start this time. Schui 3rd, can he get that podium this time?

  • And thank to bernie we are not watching racing but rain, why oh why do you have to have such a marginal race, its Malaysia its known for rain and you didnt have the race start at 1pm their time, stupid fool
  • It's one advantage of not having BBC live I guess, no sitting about during the Red flag time.

Great racing though, pity Perez went wide when really close to Alonso. Great result all the same.
  • Pity Sauber didn't bring him in when Alonso pitted for slicks. Would have been good to see him try to get past Alonso. :-)
  • @PVB he would never have been allowed to pass Alonslow :) remember he is running a Ferrari customer engine and we wouldnt want to embarrass Ferrari now would we ;)
  • We'll never know now but at that moment Perez was on primes and consistently quicker than the Ferrari, shame he slipped off. The best Ferrari driver on the podium was wee Sergio.

Perhaps he's just charmed his way into a plum drive for 2013 or maybe sooner, Felipe Baby is done.

Tell you what surprised me today, Mercedes with their lack of pace.
  • I was surprised by the McLaren also, seems that in the red flag bit they removed some front wing as they thought it would get drier quicker than it did, shame Lewis came in third again. Its very close with the teams though, the red bull doesnt look half as forward this year as it did last year, the ferrari's were as per usual sandbagging about how *bad* their car was, yeah right.

The lotus seems to be the dark horse and the sauber doesnt look to far off the leaders either :) I think this year is gonna be a very close thing :) least I hope so :)
  • I don't know if it's me being over sensitive but I find the thought of putting people's lives at risk in what is at present is a socially unstable country solely for motorsport particularly nauseating.

Now I don't / won't claim to have an in depth knowledge of the sociopolitical situation in the country in question but when team members are caught up in rioting and having petrol bombs thrown about in their vacinity then I have to question the ethics of holding the race.
  • Ethics? Never really been a strong point of F1 those.
