Can I ask - how did you get that running with the 60Hz bug? (Or were you on an SD TV at the time.)

I can't actually remember which way around it was - but over the years i've only ever used a component cable or a VGA cable to run my 360, both of which would have connected to the old Samsung HD TV as it had inputs for both.

Is it possible that I got it working by using the VGA cable maybe? Or maybe I just flicked the switch on the component lead and ran it in standard def? Not sure which to be honest - I seem to remember it looking pretty crisp so I don't think it's the latter.

If you're desperate to know then i'll try firing it up tonight and see what happens (the 360 is currently using a VGA lead to an old 17" Dell monitor).
  • No worries, think I only tried it with HDMI and got a thousand and one convoluted solutions when I looked at a few forums at the time.
  • The easy, non-convoluted solution:

    * use the composite cable to hook the 360 to your telly.
    * fire up 360, go to settings & make sure you set it to 60Hz
    * power down, plug your HDMI/component/VGA cable back in, and never worry about the 60Hz bug again.
  • 1. Reach the highest level 436 (200) 2.18 - Ninety-Nine Nights
    2. Earn A-ranking in all missions 409 (200) 2.04 - Ninety-Nine Nights

    4. Icon Racer 250 (100) 2.50 - Skate.
    5. Icon Trickster 245 (100) 2.45 - Skate.
    6. No-Nitrous Victory: Single Races 228 (60) 3.80 - RR6
    7. Socialite 223 (70) 3.18 - Gears 3
    8. Obsessive Compulsive 222 (75) 2.96 - Rage
    9. 100% 220 (100) 2.20 - Lego Star Wars Complete
    10. Elite 210 (70) 3.00 - Burnout Paradise

Nice to see a few recent ones in there. I got that Rage one about a week ago.
  • Have any of you fuckers got Arkanoid on XBLA?

Just missing one online cheevo and no bugger is ever online. Come on, let's do it!
  • Didn't know you could even get it!
  • Only about 3 years!
  • I'll swap you for the online qix ones. Ping me if you see me online after 10...
  • You the man! (even though I did you 7/3)..:)

Tell you what, I enjoyed that XBLA version a lot more than I should have done on a pad. AND that Arkanoid multiplayer isn't half bad. Shame no fucker plays it.
  • Finally managed to reach 30k Gamerscore last night after being stuck just short for what seems like months. I've had Trials Evolution to thank for not getting there sooner.
  • I didn't read it properly, but there is an article about what I assume is achievement boosting on the BBC website today. The lengths some people go to!

    image
  • I used three of those techniques when I was boosting "Seriously" on Gears of War...
  • Two biggies for me in the last two days:

Today - Storyteller in Batman Arkham City. This is the really annoying achievement where you have to talk to Calendar Man on particular dates for 12 months. I did it completely legitimately, with no clock-doctoring. What a mug. It's only worth 10gs. (It was fairly painless as long as I remembered the dates, which I almost didn't a couple of times.)

Yesterday - Active Skater in Skate 2. Teamed up with another player from TA to do this. 149/149 online challenges, similar to BO:P, some of which were really difficult. Very pleased to get this one, this late in the life of the game. Again, only worth 20gs, but a decent ratio. Only one more to get to clear up the main game, but I'm not even half way.
  • Huh. Despite limited gaming time, I seem to have passed the gamerscores of former-professional-Achievement whores kentish and MireMare.

Time for a zero-reset for a new gen, I reckon.
  • Limited gaming time? Funny how you seem to be on every time I log in hmmmm?! And your lead will be shortlived - I'll be competing Crysis in the coming weeks!

MireMare quit the 360 a little while back - he's mainly PC and WiiU now.

  • Half the time the xbox is on, it's Ernie playing with the controller (the little bugger has already learnt that the big button in the middle makes a whirry sound and the lights flash). Cue jokes about me using a ringer...

Yeah, I know MireMare moved on. Still, he left a big marker.
  • yeah, Sarah has discovered the eject button on the ps3 and Xbox. It's not good.
  • If they reset the achievements score they will catch a lot of flak and will give people more reason to switch to the PS4.

As it stands there are a lot of people (myself probably included) that feels the ties to the cheevo score attained just in the same way some stayed with world of warcraft far longer than they should have due to the virtual things they had.

That probably doesn't make sense and I can give no real explanation why without sounding like a complete spod (which I am) but if they reset gamerscores then they will lose some consumers.
  • I was chatting to Morgan about this at Matt's wedding on Saturday. It's a big call for them to make. I wonder whether they'll be a partial reset so that you get evidence of 'prestige' - a different badge for !0k increments or something like that. Or maybe a straightforward migration.

For me, they've become little markers and memories of the game. Some of the ones in Half Life 2 - not touching the sand in the for one - sum up both the invention of the designers in doing achievos properly, and the invesment put in to attaining them.
  • I'd be very surprised if the current data storage model isn't extensible. I can see them carrying most (if not all) of the data over to the new platform but then seeing how they can make further use of the data or even extend it further.
  • I like Achievements, even if I don't have anywhere an many as you lot. Agree Kentish about the memories they produce - some of the multiplayer L4D ones were a hoot to get. Halo Reach legendary on single player - MS better not take that away from me!
  • They won't be gone, they'll just be put into storage.

I'm all for a clean slate. I still chase interesting achievements, but 45k or whatever most of us have is such an abstract number these days, what's the point carrying it over to a new generation?
  • Agreed. The "gamerscore" number is meaningless. I'd be happy for them to do away with it completely.
  • They can do what they like with mine. Of more pressing concern is whether I try to get the failing drive in mine fixed, or replace the 360 with a slim, or shitcan it and wait for the new console.

Chipping away at that myself - I might frame it if I can do it. My 'No Collisions' moment.
  • You can do it! Just have to be really methodical and take your chances. The needler to take down shields and the pistol to finish was my combo of choice.
  • I’d like to see a gamer score similar to the way true achievements works, so those obscure or difficult achievements get a higher value compared to easy achievements.
For instance, if a thousand people have played a game and only two people manage to get one of the achievements, the score of that achievement should be really big. But as more people start to get it, the score gradually drops.
  • They've added achievements to phones and PCs now, I don't see how they'd get away with scrapping it. The only way we'll get a reset for the next gen is if we choose to start new accounts.

You don't seem to have passed MireMare's gamerscore, unless the TA leaderboard is wrong. You've passed their TA scores, and that might have been helped by the recent re-rating of DLC achievements, which wouldn't have taken any actual time (although it could have favoured either side.)

  • Ah right. I just looked at the default Rodent leaderboard on the TA website... As I said above, I don't actually give a hoot about Gamerscore (though I do find Achievements a little too satisfying, to the point where I play games I've lost interest in for longer than I probably should). But any chance to goad Andy must be seized upon. It's one of the T&Cs of Rodent membership.
  • I rise above it Moggers. Ankles permitting.
  • Yeah, Jimmy always says your aloof... something something ... scrubbing his back in the shower.

(My heart's not in it. I admit.)

EDIT: And I even got your/you're wrong. Time to call it a day, I reckon.

  • Think I'd be up for a reset. It would be like 'ding ding, round two.'
  • I have three achievements left in Burnout Paradise, all involving online challenges. I might try to do the Smurf Island ones this afternoon, with randoms, and I think I just need to complete the two-player and three-player blocks to get the other two. If anyone fancies helping out, let me know. I can usually be on at 8pm most weekdays, and any time at the weekend. It'd be nice to stop relying on EA's servers for another game.
  • I'd be up for the multiplayer chievos, don't have the DLC for it but the standard game I'd be in.
  • Cool. I've just set up a TA session for the island challenges tomorrow night, but is Tuesday at 8 ok for you?

I did all 50 8-player challenges yesterday, and it took about 3 hours, but I'm hoping the 2-player ones will be less trouble.
  • Sounds good to me.

Change of plans, TV is playing up so I can't get on the xbox.
  • Ah right, ok.
  • And that's the lot, for Burnout Paradise. All achievements got.

Pushing on to 500/500 challenges for that last car is probably more than I can bear, though.

Also saw the credits in NFSMW last night, but still a bit to do, there. This should probably be in the completed thread really, but I couldn't be arsed to find it.
  • Ah stunt runs...fuck that
