LA Noire
  • Which is why, in my blinkered view, I've stayed away from it.

I may well be massively wrong of course. :)
  • It's very different to Heavy Rain, with a much more 'hands-on' approach, but if you wanted to boil it down to a simple formula it would be: Phoenix Wright + Grand Theft Auto = LA Noire.
  • So it's Grand Theft Gumshoe then ?
  • Heavy Rain had a random element, usually by messing up a QTE, that could change the outcome. I think LA Noire has the same outcome, but can be achieved in several ways depending how well you investigate. The action sequences, of which there are three (chase on foot, chase by car, gunfight), could do with a bit more variation though.

I think it's raised the bar in terms of what Rockstar have achieved. Hopefully the next GTA will mature in a similar fashion.

Ah in that case, I wont bother. The visuals have won me over but it'll become just another unplayed game in my games cupboard. Probably pick it up second hand at some point.

  • I hate it because I hate all Rockstar games. When I say hate, I mean love, then hate. Apart from Bully which I hated, then loved, then got rid of, keep thinking of getting again knowing all the time that I will probably hate it.

    I haven't played it, mind.
  • Has anyone found any of the film reels yet? I've not really been looking, but they seem to be better hidden than the packages/pigeons in GTA. Not found any myself.
  • Nope, not seen any, but only realised today that they're a found item, so wasn't actively searching for them. :-]
  • My approach with the film reels at the moment has been to print out a guide then jump into free roam occasionally and search them out. You can call it cheating, but I find these map-scouring collectathons a bit daft and at least doing it this wayt has the practical value of helping you get a knowledge of the map. Anyway, these film reels are stashed away in really, really obscure places (Even for a sandbox-style map). You could try hunting them down on your own, but it'd probably drive you insane.

That explains why I've not seen any then.
  • @PVB Yep, I got 40% through the game and didn't see one myself, and that's including general wandering round the map.

If anyone's interested in a good guide, Games Radar's got the best one I've seen so far. Some of the other ones I've seen are annoyingly badly-written, whereas this one's really clear.

I'm sort of like that - I love them until I realise that it's GTA again, with the same flaws that they should have fixed by now. But they do it so well, and the worlds are so convincing.

  • Wacthed the start of a video guide to the film reels earlier and it showed a bit of a case I've just done and it was completely different to how mine ended; they arrested the crim after a chase from his premises, whereas I found him with his accomplice at their residence and ended up shooting him in a hostage situation after a chase. :-)
  • Still acting like 1940s Dirty Harry. :-)

Did a street crime earlier and I think I was supposed to catch the guy I was chasing, but he ended up jumping off a roof to get away from me. :-D

The Social Club web site is handy, listing details on crimes, landmarks, etc.

So far I've done 8/12 street crimes in Traffic, out of 40 in total in the game. :-)
  • Yeah, I had the guy jump off the roof too. I think if you aim at people during chases but don't fire, you let off a warning shot and sometimes they stop so you can arrest them. Not had that yet, most of my street crime solves have involved the coroner :p

Was that the second Traffic detective case? I think it might depend on whether you go see the wife first, or the guy who was driving the car. I chose the former before the latter. If you go see the guy first armed with all the evidence you have up to that point, then I imagine you only will have one session at the wife's house.
  • Yup, that was the one I think.

The jumper chase I tried to draw my weapon (Dirty Harry I am!) but it wouldn't let me, so I guessed I had to catch him.

If you get close enough, you hit the A button to rugby tackle them, but the only time I got close was on a drainpipe, where he kicked me in the head and I fell off. :-)

The Social Club site has pie charts, numerical data (so far; Enemies Shot Dead: 22, Head Shots: 6, Shots Hit: 83, Shots Missed: 47, etc.) and such. Dio would love it. ;-)
  • Is it better to get this on xbox or ps3? If it's just going to break my ps3 then I will opt for the xbox version but the whole 3 disc thing puts me off. I don't like getting up.
  • You'll be getting up and down for days/weeks before you have to swap discs, so it's of no concern really. ;-)

It's better on the PS3, and I don't really think there's much chance of it killing your machine, so go for it.
  • It really does seem to cause the PS3 to spin it's fan pretty hard and pretty constant.

Why is it better on the PS3, btw? If I've accidentally made the better choice, I'd like to understand why :)
  • Better framerate, effects, sound options. My slim is no louder when playing it than anything else.
  • Maybe it really is specific to the fat? My launch jobbie roars with this in the slot and it doesn't when playing pretty much anything else...
  • Could be. Stud's isn't a launch one is it?

I thought you were being personal again there?
  • I think my Slim makes more noise with this than any other game, but it's barely noticeable. The console doesn't seem to get hot.

I've moved on from Vice/Narco now, and working Arson. Still brilliant in terms of the narrative, but the gameplay is becoming predictable.
  • Made a right fuck up in that last case in the interrogation: one star.
  • Damn, I don't know if this is because of the current situation that I'm experiencing right now or not, but I'm really not enjoying this as much as RDR - which is a crying shame from my own perspective - as, after RDR, I really wanted to love this to bits. :(

I so keep waiting for this to click, but it all seems like such a chore. I hate the questioning completely, it just doesn't bloody work for me at all.

Oh well, I have just spent a very enjoyable 90 mins or so, watching the 'Lemmy' movie on DVD, which I'd completely forgotten about until I saw OPM's comment the other day.

So anyway, cheers OPM, for that at least. :)
  • Mine is a launch one. It makes some pretty horrible noises anyway which I think is the hdd slowly falling to pieces.
  • It's a good un, Lem is the best.

I thought this at first, but the story arc really starts to pick up later on and pulls you in much more.
  • Just scored one star for the last case, not because I screwed up the clue hunting or interrogation that much, but because I'm guessing the captain wanted to charge someone else other than the husband. Guess I need to redo the questioning a bit better on replay...
  • Just finished now. Really enjoyed it, and looking forward to tackling the extra dlc cases when they're available.
  • Yay. Found a film reel in the middle of a lake after I accidentally drove my car into it. 49 to go...
  • Not found any reels yet... and only half the cars. I imagine getting them all will be a PITA and need a guide. Have all the landmarks and hidden cars though.
  • The reels are just daft. The hidden packages in Vice City were doable, but these are something else. I don't mind using a guide for one or two, but there are far better ways to waste a few hours than sat following a guide to collect film reels in a game. Most of those ways involve booze to some extent, and/or possibly women.
  • Any suggestions for a simple-ish way to figure out how to track down the missing cars I'll need once I've completed all the cases? I've been pretty much jumping in random cars I see parked while out so far and discovering if I need them or not :p
  • The cars are viewable in the Extras menu. The ones you don't have are blacked out, but can make out the silhouette. They all look the same though :)
  • just played it for 7 hours today. Seems a tyreiron is the leading cause of murder.

Still don't get how evidence and lie tie up together, I think I'd prefer a PW method where you loose part of a 'lifebar' rather than just being tossed out of the question. I know its supposed to be all in the face but unless you've monitored the interviewee for a while or on the first question its pretty much a shot in the dark
  • The evidence proves something. If they say the opposite, then you press the Lie button.

e.g. Using non-spoiler info. Document proving non-local origin of person.
    Person says they live locally.
    That's a lie. :-)
If you get it wrong, you tend to find out that info another way, or other evidence to prove innocence/guilt.

I find Doubt a lot harder to get right.

  • If they look shifty, and you haven't got any relevant evidence, then doubt that shit.
  • Finished the game tonight. Things really do start taking off once you hit Vice and go to the next desk afterwards. Still mulling over the ending... it isn't completely satisfactory, but then again, when are things in real life? And it does completely leave things open to a sequel. Time to round up the cars, film reels and redo some cases...

Yeah, I actually thought about that after I posted. Does mean making a list though from the Extras and cross referencing against a master list... c'est la vie.
  • I must admit my playing style seems to be more Frank Drebin than Elliott Ness.
One moment was at the first murder seeing the cut scene about the footprints "I'm going to take a mould of the footprints to compare at the lab" cue an NPC walking straight across the footprints
  • So, this elusive Rockstar Pass has finally emerged - it lets you purchase all the planned DLC (Pre-order stuff available now with further cases coming out June & July) for a discounted price.

Basically, you’re pre-ordering the DLC in bulk. Personally I like this way better than EA’s method; while BC2 got new maps (Eventually), none of ME2’s Cerberus Network stuff amounted to much more than padding and you still had to pay for the good stuff. I’ll pay a bit at launch for the ‘real’ DLC over getting fobbed off with a code for junk anyday. Sure, it’s a way to pad out LA Noire’s gross (Not that it needs it), but at least they’re saving you a few spacebucks down the line.
  • Yup, grabbed it myself last night. :-)
  • I'm enjoying LA No Ire, up to the third case on Vice now, but I can only really play it in small doses. The most I can manage is about one whole case before it gets a bit repetitive.
  • yeah be nice if there was a bit more cross interrogation or the ability/choice to arrest people.
  • In the next one, I'd like there to be more choice in what you do, so you can become a dirty cop and frame people etc. I'd like there to be a testifying mode where you have to go to court, and you can lie, or get caught out by a legal beagle.

Overall, LA No Ire is a solid base to build from, but I hope the series doesn't go the way of GTA and just rest on its laurels without innovating.
  • Just finished this. I was a bit disappointed with the end but overall it was really enjoyable. The mrs sat and watched me play the whole thing much like she did with heavy rain. The game was really solid a few things pissed me off like the lack of choice at times but they were really easy to see past. I never got the option to free ride though and I didn't do any street crimes as we wanted to finish the game and then do them but the option isn't there to just drive around waiting fornthe radio.
  • You need to go to the 'cases' option on the title screen for the 'free ride'.
