LA Noire
  • Oh well, hopefully turns up on Monday then. If it's any consolation, I can't play it because I'm revising all day.
  • I can't play it because I'm sole childcare provider until about 3pm, then going out to a gig no later than 5. Could play at midnight when I get home, I suppose...
  • Hah!

Postie had put the game through a neighbour's letterbox, so I now have the game. :-)

Too late to play now though, so have just installed it and hopefully I'll get a play late tonight or tomorrow morning. :-]

I read more about this last night and it looked like R* were using the PS3 firmware as a scapegoat, as 360s are also seeing the game crash.

    http://support.rockstargames.com/entries/20126677-what-to-do-if-you-are-crashing-or-freezing-in-l-a-noire

There's crashing and then there's burning out your console. Crashing is Rockstar's fault, burning out your PS3 is Sony's. The overheating issue doesn't happen on 360s.

    And frankly, that's a surprise.

The thing is, there's very frequently claims about this kind of thing. People started accusing Halo 3 of killing 360s, but it was just a case of their 360 dieing (a probably inevitable) death on the same week Halo came out.

    Achievement unlocked: first case solved!

  • Heh. :-)

Thats fucking shameful, posting error like that could have cost you time and money if your neighbour wasn't honest.

Royal mail gets worse and worse.
  • My review: L.A. Noire - Technically brilliant but it's not for me.
  • Oddly enough, that's my review of you Morgs. ;)

Sell it to me for special price? ;)

It's bloody tricky getting some of the question approaches right sometimes. Just buggered up one interview already, find the difference between doubt and lie a fine line

Yeah, loving the game but this is the one major nitpick I have with it. Without getting into anything spoilery, it's very easy to pick the wrong one even when you've just uncovered important evidence or if the interviewee is looking suspicious. While it's a good rule of thumb to only pick 'lie' if you have absolute irrefutable evidence, you're still locked into a system where there's only one 'right' answer, even if you have logical reasons for picking another one. It can get a little frustrating, as your ratings for each case depend largely on how many right options you pick.

    Maybe...

    Sell it to me instead.
  • Give it to me as a birthday pressie. ;)
  • When's your birthday mate?

If I decide to sell it, it'll be first come first served chaps.
  • Er, January. ;)
  • No pressure at all here. Not sure I have time to play it and I was considering trading in Portal 2 for it... if LA Noire is still getting good reviews in a couple of weeks.
  • Did a more complex case just now: enjoying it hugely anyway but the extra depth puts it into potential classic territory.
  • That's what the lasses have always said.

Morgs, you can take that game and shove it in my joy hole. You know it makes sense. Matt will only trade it in next week and Damo won't play it for three years.
  • Finally managed to start the game and the tutorial/first case had me hooked. :-)

Messed up my first interrogation, but will hopefully do better in future. :-]
  • Is there an option to throw people down the stairs?
  • Funny enough, yes. I enjoyed spanking some upright lady up a set of steps, looked hilarious.

Looks like I am your best option morgan!

  • Really loving this, especially the seemingly multiple ways through each case.

Some of the questioning is a bit harsh; one wrong accusation messes it up. I assume this ruins the replayability if there is only one correct answer to a question.

I'm missing having a home like GTA and RDR too. It's difficult exploring when I'm on work's time, with crims to bust.

Once you've finished a desk you can replay any of the cases, but there's also a free-roam option so you can do all the exploring you like.

  • I thought Portal 2 was going to be my GOTMBY but after playing LA Noire for 2 hours I might already have to change my mind. I've been waiting for a proper police investigator type of game for years. After all the bollocks spoken about Heavy Rain, this is how a proper interactive movie should be done.
  • You and me are going to fall out. Chubby Rain was brilliantly immersive.

  • Yeah agreed, Heavy Rain was fucking excellent.
  • Haha.. Chubby Rain. Brilliant.
  • Heavy Rain excelled in that your decisions had a real change to the outcome. LA Noire doesn't seem to have that, but solving the cases is extremely satisfying.

I think I've finally sussed the Truth/Doubt/Lie now. There's a fine line between doubt and lie, but you need proof to back up an accusation of lying.
  • Anyone playing it in black-and-white?
  • Anyone playing it in black-and-white?

That wouldn't be advisable, as the health meter is that the visuals gradually go black and white as you get hurt. ;-)
  • Well yeah, you have to gauge your health by the heartbeat when set to black and white mode, but it's an interesting option.
  • Someone mentioned it's most like playing a TV cop show.

I keep expecting PhelpsSergeant Joe Friday to say "Just the facts, ma'am." :-)

  • Blimey, I had to work hard at the first proper case to get the conviction, but am now a Detective. :-)
  • @Muttley I don't see any free roam option; just the cases I've already completed. Am I missing something?
  • I got promoted to Homicide earlier and that brought the free roam option out.

Also, a case just now involved an eighth of an inch of anal bruising.
  • The 'grimble' file?
  • That's the fella.
  • I like how at the end of cases it tells you things you could do differently.
  • Is there a 2 player option so you can do good cop-bad cop?
  • Jumped onto free roam for a while last night to find some cars and take a look around. Wound up cruising down Sunset Blvd at sunset, with orange sky and the street lights coming on… Just brilliant!

Anyone know if intuition points earned in free roam carry over to the story mode? It'd make sense to use free roam to gather collectable and farm intuition minus having to worry about investigations you really should be attending to.

  • Everything is going to be shit after playing this isn't it?
  • A day off work today, and a day spent on this. I've been reassigned to Vice, but working the Homicide cases has to be one of the most satisfying moments in gaming for me.

Some of the gameplay mechanics are a bit predictable; running after crims, driving after crims. The investigative and interrogations are really well done. I'll take back my earlier comment on no replayability - there are several ways to bust a case.

Easily GOTMBY for me. Better than Red Dead Redemption last year.
  • I've turned into a 1940s Dirty Harry, spending a few hours tonight doing lots of street crime cases, blowing all the suspects away with extreme prejudice. :-D

Managed to shoot one perp in the gun hand, then the crotch and then finished him off with one in the forehead. The hostage he was holding looked rather shocked. :-D

Heard "Code 4....send an ambulance...and a coroner...." loads of times tonight. 8-)
  • So has this game raised the bar on everything that has gone before?
  • I wouldn't say so. It cleverly disguises traditional game contrivances behind slick presentation, and does so in a very enjoyable way. However, it doesn't disguise the fact that at its heart the game is very linear and your choices are limited.
  • Hmm, so it's a bit like 'Heavy Rain' then which despite being enjoyable is essentially 'Dragon's Lair' like in gameplay?
