LA Noire
  • I'm getting a little freaked out by the faces in LA Noire. They're equally stunning and disturbing at the same time. It's not something that should be able to be done in this generation of consoles and it looks like some FMV with some strange effects plastered all over it to give it a computer game effect, but it's not, it's actual in game magic. Witchcraft I Say. This shouldn't be possible. Burn Rockstar the Heathens

I'm so customed to seeing standard computer generated faces look good, but with a million subtlely incorrect ways they look wrong, that my brain is a little broken by what I'm perceiving as a real persons face in this game. It seems like the next generation of consoles got bored of waiting and decided to show off a little earlier.

We'll all get used to it in no time and will expect it in future in games from the largest publishers, but for now it's next gen wizardry and not normal that I'm going in on day one. If the games good, then bonus. I'm being a graphics whore for this one.

  • What machine have you got it on? Also, my child has ruined gaming for me so I don't know what sort of game this is. What sort of game is it? :)

  • Yeah it does look a bit uncanny valley for me watching the trailers... I'm waiting to see which version is better before ordering. Leaning towards the PS3 at this stage but the possibilty of multiplayer action pulls me 360 wise.

  • PS3 version here as it was the lead platform apparently and only has one disc, which is ideal for people like me who are confined to their daises due to largely-than-average bones.
  • 360 for me, because I haven't got a PS3.

Looks like I finished Red Dead Redemption just in time...
  • This seems to be doing things differently enough (with all the emphasis on investigation) that I'm paying attention. Will be waiting for reviews before any decision is made.
  • The facial animation is definitely the most impressive I've seen by a mile, and yet if you watch the T.V ad you wouldn't even notice it! Instead they've got text across the screen saying "This game is the bollocks" - Zoo

Who gives a fuck what Zoo thinks!? Show off the animation!
  • Here's some facial.

Skip to 2:45 to see what I'm banging on about.

    360 for me.
  • Uncanny Valley, innit.
  • Fucking Hell.

    /goes off to order it......

Used the Sainsbury code from the Chad Valley thread to get it for £31.99 :-)

  • Doing noir kicker lighting rigs and super high-resolution face models without self shadowing or subsurface scattering is, I think, where all the uncanny is coming from, because they got the animation and modeling and acting dead to rights. Other games on this engine haven't needed that kind of lighting model, but other games haven't been about hard lighting and closeups.

Wonder why they didn't slot that in -- whether it's a weakness in the engine design or they blew their entire GPU budget on the facial meshes. Damn shame, though.
  • The mo-cap on this thing looks well impressive, though to me it’s the potential of getting an honest-to-god detective game that has got me most pumped. It’s looking like they’re approaching it with more emphasis on doing actual detective work than combat, which will hopefully allow for some more subtle storytelling than what we’re used to.

Interesting that the game is being developed by Team Bondi for Rockstar, but with a lot of Rockstar people directly involved at development level. It’s almost like RS is using Team Bondi as if they were one of their subsidiary studios – wouldn’t be surprised if RS is planning to buy them outright, dependent on the success of the game.
  • Am well looking forward to this but is anyone else becoming a little concerned about the lack of reviews for this game?

I mean, it's out in a week's time and there's still nothing out there plus both Edge and Games have just come out without a review. That's not normally a good sign is it?

  • It's Rockstar's SOP.
  • Really? I could have sworn I'd read a review of Red Dead Redemption before I pre-ordered it.
  • It's Rockstar's SOP.

    Sucking of penises?

  • Charlie Brooker has a copy and is tweeting about it. The git. Quite fancy this now.
  • I'm reading his tweets too. He posts every 5 seconds! How is he playing it?
  • There are lots of reviews out now, and their embargo finished yesterday so maybe he snagged a review copy off someone?

It does look very nice though, It is definitely on the games I want to play this generation list.
  • Looking great from the reviews. They're pretty much all saying that it plays much more like an old-school adventure game than GTA, which has got me hanging to play the thing even more.
  • I've got an untouched RDR and also the zombie disc sitting on the shelf. Why am I considering LA Noire?
  • I accidentally pre-ordered this last night. Whoops.
  • I may need this.
  • I've grabbed it for us to play together. Hugely looking forward to it.
  • I'd rather play it on my own thanks.
  • Good, saves me having to fork out to get our front door widened.
  • Sharing: It's not for Chad.
  • Food, films, games -- solo activities.
  • Food, films, games and sex?
  • I'm abstinent -- too fat to actually reach it.
  • Chad, you should get out more. Do a bit of walking, maybe some sport.

    Oh, wait...

    My thoughts exactly.

Might trade Portal 2 in for it... not interested in another GTA but the adventure vibe has me interested. Solid 9/10 reviews so far.

  • I've been keeping my eye on this and everything I've seen looks completely awesome. I was going to hold off buying it for a while but I've caved in and pre-ordered. If it's even half as good as Red Dead Redemption I will be happy. :)
  • Anyone know how quick Sainsburys are at delivering games on release day?

Am hoping they get it to me by Friday, so I have this weekend to play it. :-)

  • Aye, I'm in for LA Noire too. Though I'm not quite done with RDR and have AssCreedBro still in the cellophane. So it makes sense to hold off for a bit.
  • Mine shipped a couple of hours ago. Might have it tomorrow, more likely on Friday.
  • Where did you order it from Paul?
  • I'm going to buy this from a real shop on Friday.
  • Nice packaging, embossed and foiled. I wouldn't have bothered for the standard version meself :)
  • @PVB: ShopTo.

  • Will check my e-mail when I get home to see if my Sainsburys order's been updated. :-)
  • My Gayme copy got sent out yesterday lunchtime apparently, but still no sign of it as yet. Normal posty has been and gone too, but I think it may come with one of the parcel people if memory serves correctly.

No hurry mind, I'm still only on about chapter 6 of Portal 2, so have that to finish first.
  • Shopto are pretty good at getting preorders out, mine always arrive the day before release date.. pretty sure its because they have a refund policy if your preorder arrives later than its release day so they send it extra early to cover their asses.
  • From the 1UP review

L.A. Noire is almost everything I hoped it would be, and very little of what I thought it was. Judging by trailers and gameplay footage alone, I expected it to be a Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game wrapped within Grand Theft Auto IV's game engine, with some femme fatales and fedora-wearing gangsters thrown in to fulfill the "noire" element. In actuality, this has very little to do with the GTA games, and is probably more closely related to graphic adventure games and movies. The relative lack of free-form gameplay and driving-over-prostitutes is most certainly going to turn off some gamers -- the real draw here is the story, and how the game forms the mechanics around that.

    Count me IN
  • Are sure the story won't put you off?
  • Matt will buy it, play it for an hour, then trade it in for something else!
  • Sainsburys wouldn't let me use that code. Cocks.

Sainsburys site says the order is 'processing', so I'm guessing it'll get shipped tomorrow, hopefully. :-)
  • Matt will trade something in for it, play it for a few hours, then trade it in for something else!

    Fixed that for you. ;)
  • For those of us getting it, how many are already members of the Rockstar Social Club?

We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models.

Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or "Red Lighting" after having installed 3.61. This can range from games randomly freezing to PS3s turning off anywhere between 30 mins use to 2 hours. We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed.

At this time we are recommending contacting Sony directly to report the overheating issue. However, this is not the end of our support; we are continuing to test L.A. Noire on all firmware versions and hardware models to isolate the issues and see what can be done. As always, we will update this article as soon as we have updates.
