The all-new Sony Playstation 3 - PS3 Thread
  • What? Those things show up on my XMB and I've never updated Home.

Same here, I've never had a problem finding things on XMB and it's a lot tidier than the sprawling mess of Xbox 360.
  • I think they're both as good/bad as each other, as they're both fundamentally the same thing. But the Xbox has more pictures.
  • I find the xbox a bit fisher price after using the ps3 for a while.

The main thing xbox has going for it, which is the main thing I use either for, is that xbox will launch a disk at boot, or will launch a disk by pressing up then x. On the PS3 you need to go left twice, down once, then x. THAT'S TWO EXTRA CLICKS, MAN! (four if you count just booting the disk at powerup). UNACCEPTABLE!
  • Pfft... you didn't have to click ANYTHING on the Atari VCS - Just turn on and: BOOM! - GAME!
  • From doing some reading across various forums the issue with the iplayer etc icons seems a bit hit or miss. If they were nowhere to be found, one of the possible solutions was to update home then try again, which worked. So either something's a bit broken or it's a strangely unintuitive way of doing things. Either way it was bloody annoying. Still, all sorted now.
  • @RexxFiend -- the PS3 boots to the Game menu first, to a disc if you have it in, so you only need to press X. I believe you can turn auto booting on too.

    Mine doesn't.

edit - it will autoboot a disk if you insert it but not if it's already in at poweron.

  • Thinking about it, you might need to turn on some option to get it to boot to the game menu, like the Welcome Channel on 360.
  • aha - found it. You have to turn off "What's new" in the system settings (of course!).

Then it goes straight to the game menu and focusses on the disk, so you just have to press x. You've saved me countless clicks Chad, I don't know how I could ever repay you..

(xbox still wins this one tho - it will boot directly into the disk).
  • One of my flatmates has spilled coke on his ps3 pad. It is dead. But he has offered it up for spares on here if anyone has need of buttons, triggers or batteries etc. Just let me know and I will send it your way rather than the bin.
  • Other PS3 firmware 4.0 changes include PlayStation Plus offering automatic updates for game patches, system software, sync trophy information and recommended games and videos.
  • I thought PS+ already did that?
  • System updates only I believe.
  • It already does all that, or at least that's my PlayStation experience.
  • Yeah, I'm pretty sure my one does game patches and sheeat already
  • You should let Sony know.
  • I tried, but apparently he was too busy setting higher than cut prices for memory cards and being Evil and cuntish apparently.
  • Shite - didn't realise the update was out today. I would have grabbed it earlier.

    4.0 - major release. That's gonna be a biggun'

    Welcome to, etc..
  • I've left it ticking overnight, it can't be that major as it let me play Ico without making me do the update first
  • You can play games without doing the update, you just won't be able to get online.
  • I was sure that some updates before have bricked me out completely until I'd done them
  • If you below the one on the disc it will, but that's unlikely if you're internetted up.
  • Maybe I'm thinking about my long-forgotten, dust gathering former buddy, the motion controlled White box under the TV....
  • Wasn't too bad as it turns out - only took about 10 mins (hurrah for fast internet!)
  • Quite surprised - one of the official PS3 controllers that came with my console has died completely. It won't charge, light up or anything. I suspect the kids hVe been lobbing it around the room. Time for a new one. Any recommendations for a cheapy 3rd party one? Doesn't even need to have rumble tbh.
  • Contact Sony, I believe they'll fix it for nowt if the battery has died.
  • Oh nice one - I'll give that a go Chadders.
  • Apparently not. Young Jack from Sony tells me it's only covered by the standard 12 month warranty that came with the console.

"Best thing you can do Mr Temple is go out and buy a new one".

Thank fuck he told me that, or I might have gone out and done something stupid.
  • I remember Sony saying that if a battery died on a controller they'd replace it as the battery cannot be replaced by the end user, as per the 360.

Sorry Unkie T -- Gripper Sony strikes again!
  • @TT - did you tell him who you were?
  • He starts all telephone conversations with "Hello, this is Tony Temple, international playboy and Missile Command world champion".
  • Well I thought I'd give one of these things a go.

For a fiver its got to be worth a shot. See what happens when it arrives next week.

  • Mr Tony, I may still have a spare pad you can cannabalise. Will check the junk drawer after I leave work.
  • That's a good point I have a dismantled ps3 pad here given to me by my flatmate after he spilled coke on it, if you have no luck or anyone else wants some batteries \ triggers \ buttons just shout up and will send it off in the postie's havasack.

Oooh Ta. It's either the battery or the USB socket that's Knackered I reckon.
  • Naughty Dog go zombie.

    The Last of Us
  • Oooo looks interesting. Wonder how it's going to play, what with the combat against supernatural stuff of Unfarted generally being the weakest part.

Looks stunning, the characters in particular.
  • Looks good, one to keep an eye on.
  • Yep. Another very impressive cut scene tech demo from Naughty Dog.
  • :)

Not jealous of their (apparent) creative free reign with Sony, at all.
  • Oh shit.
  • Very odd, he's no longer working there and contracting while he finished TLG :/
  • I would love to have heard that conversation.

Maybe he's gone to work for Shigsy ;)
  • I read that a week-or-so back, he left a while ago apparently.
  • I heard the rumour a while back too, just seen this confirmed.
  • I had a hankering for a skateboarding game recently so yesterday I picked up Skate 3 for PS3. I had the original on 360 and quite liked it but got a bit frustrated with some of the challenges and abandoned it.

The real breakthrough with Skate 3 (and I know it's been out for ages so sorry if I'm covering old ground) is the hardcore difficulty. The physics are adjusted to something a little more realistic, making it more of a sim than an arcade experience. Having skated for most of my life, it's great to play a game that "gets" the appeal of skateboarding. I just spent half an hour trying to learn tailslides - it really does feel like you're learning the trick rather than just executing a combo of button pushes, and it's a delight. Sort of wishing I'd got it on 360 as it's mainly controlled with the analogue sticks but I'm sure I'll get used to them.

The only game that got close to the sim style before was the much underrated Thrasher: Skate and Destroy on PS1, I used to love that game. Looking forward to getting better at this and hoping they don't break it for Skate 4.

The line up of names in the opening credits is pretty breathtaking too.
