WotR MAME Challenge Season 10: CLOSED FOR ENTRIES
  • So, looking for a show of hands for a tenth season of the MAME Challenge. Slightly simplified this time as there will only be specific game achievements rather than challenge ones, and each game will run for a full month. There'll probably be eight games in total, kicking things off after the summer. Given the extra amount of play time, hopefully this will allow those that have thought they don't really have the time to join in.

As it makes things considerably easier if the number of players stays constant, you'll need to sign up in advance if you want to play for points. Obviously anyone is welcome to play the game and post scores, you just won't get any points if you're not on board before we start.

Also, there's an updated website in progress to accompany the new season:

WotR MAME Challenge Website - Season 10

In keeping with the simplification, the site will now give you all the information you need on the one page. The current game will be there, along with it's achievements and running scorerboard. For each player on the scoreboard you'll be able to see at a glance, using the colour coding, who's playing a Joker and what achievements they've picked up for the current and previous games. On the right there'll be the overall leaderboard which show a card for each player with their game score, achievement score and total score - sorted into their relative positions. Hopefully this will provide a lot more information in one place and be a lot quicker for me to update as scores are posted and achievements are picked up. For those that understand these things I've made it A LOT easier for me to move players up and down the various boards than before!

Anyway, there you go. If you want to win it, you've got to be in it. Or something like that.

    Man of many words. :p

  • If there's a month per game, I think I should be able to fit that into any schedule :p
  • I'm in. Well, someone has to be last.
  • Fuck that shit.

Erm, I mean, me! And Aidan!

    :-P

If games are going to run for a month, can I make a suggestion and say you extend the season to ten games, maybe with the last one being a special one in some way? Then maybe you can do a month off, then a Champion's Choice game for a month before the ten game season kicks off again.

    Just a wee thought.
  • You just don't want me to have any time off do you?

    ;)
  • A month off! That's a twelfth of a year!
  • I've been a bit slack with the last season, but my plate will be less full soon. So I'm in.
  • Count me in
  • Ten players so far, including a couple of newbies. :)
  • I was planning to drop out due to time commitments, but a game a month sounds good to me. In!

Also, I'd say it's safe to include MrsM too. She pretty much copies everything I do.
  • I'm in. must get juno first played...
  • Thirteen players now. Woohoo!

Not sure whether to just assume Twisted will be playing this time (as he's been such a driving force with the current season) or wait for him to actually say he wants in. ;)
  • I'm in too, a game a month will really help to keep playing the entire season!
  • And you've been added!
  • I was going to bow out as I've felt guilty to not getting round to playing some of the games. Also I've realised just how much I don't love all old games! If it's monthly I'm a bit more confident so I'd like to join in.
  • You may sir. :)
  • Where better to make my first post in the new Rodent site than here? 1 game a month, even I could handle that.

Please sir, pick me, pick me. :)
  • New blood eh? Welcome aboard.

Not decided on a date for the new season to kick off yet. Will be autumn'ish I reckon.
  • What year will that be Spooky? ;-)
  • Hey, the last season's only just finished!!
  • Haha :-) When do we get a final table so we know for sure that Mr. Oakley has won?
  • Oh crap. Soon, very soon.

    Promise.
  • Erm, what with the move and everything, the next season is kinda on hold for a bit.

    Bear with people. Bear with.
  • It's all fine.
    The Edge is fine.
    Adam Clayton is fine.
    The Drummer is fine.

    #alanpartridge
  • No bother, we are not going any where :-)
  • Me please
  • Dogbreath's in!

It's the lack of internet that's holding this up now. Soon guys. Soon.
  • We can wait, really looking forward to its return mind :-)

  • For this season I'm happy to take suggestions for challenges. Clearly this could give rise to people choosing games they know they're good at, but I'm sure we're all above that. Choose ones you've enjoyed in the past or haven't played before and fancy a go at. It all comes down to what ones I can create manageable achievements for in the end - but any input would be welcome.

Just MAME games again for this season. Trying to get everyone on any other emulator working on an even keel always proves a little too tough I find.
  • bubble bobble :)
  • Yeah, that's right - straight in there with a nepotistic post. You'll get me thrown off the challenge board young lady!

However, everything from the scoring to the power-ups are a little too random for my liking in Bubble Bobble, but will put it on the list of possibles.
  • I'd love another week of playing Skykid, a real find for me that was.
  • I'll chuck a few your way this evening.

@Ely: A week? These games are going to be running for a month young sir!
    @PaulEMoz: Ta fella.
  • MrsM and I are a fan of Puzzle Bobble and clones (Puzzle de Pon, etc). Not sure how the scoring works though, I'd have to check.

(Moz: They're not actually puzzle games, don't worry).
  • @spookyelectric1 Even better :-)
  • How about a classics season? DK, Pacman, galaga, etc.
or maybe a game from each year in the 80's?
pacman, rally-x or centipede for 1980.. etc.
Wikipedia has a list, up to 1984, about half way down on this page
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_age_of_video_arcade_games
  • Nice suggestions peeps. Keep 'em coming!
  • @mroakley: The only problem with the 'classics' idea is a lot of them have been done on the 360 and already have achievements. Thinking of new ones could be a bit tough. The one for each year of the 80s is a nice one though.
  • There seemed to be a lot of much older, simpler titles in the last season - I'd like to see more 16-bit style offerings in the vein of R-Type etc
  • Of course, we can't look back through all the old seasons to see what has already been played...

Pity. I'll still throw some names into the hat later on.
  • Here's a thought... if they're running for a month, have you given any thought to possibly running two games at the same time? It'll be a bit more admin, but I was just thinking that a month is a long time if you don't like a game. With two going together, it might encourage a bit more play and more score submissions in general.
  • Nice idea Pauly but it's tough enough to come up with cheevos for one game at a time! I realise not everyone will like every game, but that's where the cheevos come in I think. Gives you a reason to try a different type of game out.

In fairness the challenge slowly became more elaborate and complicted over the last couple of seasons and life gets in the way a bit when it comes to managing it all and indeed playing it. The general consensus from most players was for each game to be extended to a month at a time.
  • I like the idea of 2 a month, but yeah we don't want to kill poor Spooky with this.
How about the winner of the previous round (or the one before) comes up with a 2nd game + cheevos?
Hmm.. maybe that is getting too elaborate.

Another idea, something like The Chain that Mark Radcliffe does with songs, games that have a connection with each other. Again maybe this is something that a previous round winner does.
  • The cheevos are a lot tougher than you might think. You have to play the game and try to spot things that you can collect/do in a certain time/score points for and that takes a fair bit of time.

Having two games, regardless of who comes up with the second game and/or cheevos, will still mean double the admin sorting the scoring out.

I like the connections thing though. :)
  • To be perfectly honest, while I appreciate the huge amount of effort Spooky puts in, I'm not that fussed about the cheevos. I find it a bit of a faff trying to remember and then track a handful of different goals whilst playing a game and invariably hit the Game Over screen with no idea whether or not I've got any of them.

Given the amount of work coming up with cheevos in the first place, coupled with the extra admin keeping track of them afterwards, I wouldn't be too upset if we went back to pure high score. Or maybe occasionally have a cheevo if something obvious presents itself, but don't feel you have to come up with four (five?) for every game? It's completely your call, Spooky, but I fear if this becomes too much of a chore it might eventually get abandoned.
