TV and telly-box gubbins

  • Fantastic series isn't it?

Also Ice Road Truckers is well worth a watch, even if they use some shocking CGI to illustrate what could go wrong. In a totally OTT way as well.

Did watch the truckers a few times, but it didn't grab me like DC has. :-)

  • @spooky

I'm always wary when a show keeps putting out-takes in. After a very short while you start to get the feeling that most are done on purpose.

  • Tempted not to post this in case I get shouted down in a torrent of abuse but has anyone else here seen Mrs Brown's Boys?

My mother-in-law enthusiastically recommended to us, which usually means either:

    (a) It's set in Ireland
    (b) It has Irish people in it
    (c) It has people she knows (from Ireland) in it
    (d) a,b, and c.

I gave it 3 minutes before switching off.
  • It's utter, utter, utter, utter shite. Basically we still hate England and express that by sending this sort of crap over. When's the new Westlife album out?
  • Oh, and thanks for Jedward too.

    Feckers.
  • I was crying with laughter on the first episode. I think it's great.
  • I knew it was going to polarise. Like I said, I don't actually know if I like it or not but I'm watching it and laughing like a loon. Which I guess is the benchmark of comedy. It doesn't have to be clever or satirical to be funny.

In fairness, that was anomaly that could have happened anywhere. I think the parents are first cousins or something.

  • Mrs Brown's Boys.

    Watched the first episode.

It's sort of brilliant at what it does.
  • It's a guy called Brendan O'Carroll who is sort of a panto-level celeb here. He's been hawking the character in admittedly successful stage shows for a long time. Sophisticated humour you won't get.
  • It's a GUY?! Jeez OPM where's the spoiler tag?

    ;)
  • Limmy's Show - generally bit hit or miss, but I love this segment.

  • Has anybody watched Treme and is it any good?
  • I'm really enjoying it Chad, it can be a bit odd when you keep seeing 'Wire' actors showing up, and quite often in very minor roles, so you have to rewind to check and see if it really was them. Very strong cast all round though and my favourite so far probably being the flaky and strung out Davis character - played by Steve Zahn. Music is fantastic too, even if like myself you're not particularly tuned to the jazz vibe, you'll find yourself toe tapping along. :)

All in all, it's pretty damn great - and I see it's been picked up for a second season now, according to IMDB at least.
  • Cool. I saw it's getting a Blu-ray release this month in the States (next month over here), so might give it a try.
  • If you've got kids, I highly recommend The WotWots, about a little pink alien and a little blue alien who live in a steampunk spaceship in the zoo. Unusually for kids TV, there also seem to be about a billion episodes of it and I keep catching ones I haven't seen.

Today's opened with some dancing, which was funny enough anyway but ended up with Spotty Wot (the slightly mental brother) slouching back over his chair and pulling the 'open the hatch' chain pretty much exactly like Pamela Anderson does in Barb Wire. Cut away to Dotty Wot (much more sensible sister) pulling a Pass The Mind Bleach face. Awesome. Jamie couldn't work out why I was laughing so much.
  • Season 2 of Fringe resumes on Sky this week - Wednesday 10pm
  • Haha, it's on Milkshake On Demand - here. 3:10 for the very funny bit.

Ta for the heads up. :-)

Love it. Mind you, says something about your mind Dave if you are taking that scene from BarbWire and not Flashdance...:)

(edit: or something about mine, just watched it again and haven't seen BarbWire)

Yeah, The WotWots is ace. From the twisted mind of Richard Taylor; Weta special effects guru who's credits include Meet the Feebles, Braindead and of course Lord of the Rings (and many more).

  • Oh, on the kids TV front I also love the Beep Beep Tree from The Beeps:

Ahhh, we all feel better for that. :)

    And I've never seen Flashdance.

(edit) You're commenting about my mental state because I watched a dodgy science fiction B movie starring a blonde with large baps and haven't seen Flashdance? I would call that state of affairs normal in my world. Metrosexual ahoy!

  • Not really a heads up.
Just heard they're making a US version of House of Cards, surely that will have to be radically different to the original to have a chance of working.

    DADDY!

  • Oh nice.... that'll keep you going for a bit Steve-O!

    Cracking series that.
  • If the postman threw it at you, it could have been ironic.
  • Sounds awesome! Going to give it a shot.

(Hang on a sec - that was in response to Spooky's post about Mrs. Brown's Boys).

  • Still watching the first ep - just got to the thermometer bit! This is great.
  • I want to get some series box sets to keep me from going mental over the next few weeks. I'd preferably like some 70s or 80s sci fi or horror classics - I've already seen the original Day of the Triffids series, The Tripods, and the Quatermass programmes, but I'd like more of that kind of thing.

    Any suggestions?
  • Blake's 7
    Tomorrow People
    Children Of The Stones
    Tom Baker Dr Who
    Edit:
    UFO
    Space 1999

  • Sapphire & Steel
  • I watched the Hammer House of Horror tv series box set on holiday a couple of years ago. A fairly ropy standard, but completely compelling viewing.
  • I know the production values tend mostly the the awful side and the acting is a bit variable but Blake's 7 is still phenomenally well written - invariably sharp and darkly witty.
  • And if you want something a bit more left-field and offbeat, Sapphire and Steel comes generally recommended, although I haven't actually watched any of them in modern times, I keep meaning to remedy that.
  • I would happily watch the whole of Blakes 7 again.
  • Definitely Children Of The Stones.
  • And The Changes
  • Another vote for Blakes 7 here - brilliant telly.
  • Beasts by Nigel Kneale is worth a look too. The effects are bollocks but the stories and scripts are sharp as fuck.
  • Excellent, thanks chaps. Have added all those to the list.

Yeah, I think I might give Hammer House of Horror a go - there were some great episodes. I'm also quite tempted by the complete Tales of the Unexpected, all 112 of them. I also vividly remember a couple of episodes of Amazing Stories for being brilliant, so might give that a try too.

Was Robin of Sherwood actually any good? I had a crush on Michael Praed, black and white poster from Athena on my bedroom wall and everything, but is it worth re-watching?

You can watch some of them if you share the breastfeeding.

I've a mate who picked up most of them on VHS ten years or so back and reckons it still holds up fairly well now.

The late night and early morning bottle feeds for our two is how I managed to watch just about all of Star Trek (Shatner), Deep Space 9, Voyager (until I gave up because it was a bit shite), two thirds of Tom Baker's Doctor Who run, Babylon 5, Star Fleet, Firefly and Space 1999. SF is a fine choice.
  • Em - try The Nightmare Man, a curious but very entertaining mystery. A bit like Diet Nigel Kneale, but really fun.

Celia Imrie is young and sexy in it!
  • I have Robin of Sherwood on DVD. It is ace.

THE scariest tv programme I ever saw. Even checking it out on YouTube as an adult brings back the thrilling horror.
  • Nightmare Man added to the list.
  • Also keep in mind Carpenter's 80s output, a bit later than what you're talking about; he's a huge Quatermass fan and it comes out in a lot of his stuff. Prince of Darkness especially.
  • +1 for The Nightmare Man, nabbed that off a torrent last year. Took me ages to find out what it was as I only had dim recollections of the plot.
  • I might look up the book at some stage - Children of the Voldari or words to that effect.

    I loved the music.

Weirdly, I always thought Blake's 7 felt more like Robin Hood than Robin of Sherwood did. RoS was more like King Arthur .. all magicky and Celticky.
