The Android Thread
  • Because Androids have feelings too...
  • I got a Androids!
  • you can get cream, etc..
  • I saw that Samsung are releasing the Galaxy S 2, and a Galaxy Tab 10.1 inch..

Could be interesting.. Depends what price they launch at, but the 10.1 Tab could be an iPad rival?

(edit: although that review says the build quality is a bit rough)

  • 1GB RAM for fuck's sake. All fields round here etc
  • So - the "Playstation phone" is officially released - the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. What do we think? Anyone been to the show in Barcelona and seen one for real?
  • It's a start. When they start porting over NGP games, then it gets interesting.
  • Waited with great anticipation and today HTC finally announced the 'HTC Flyer'

7 inch, 1.5GHz (single core) assuming Snapdragon of some sort, Android 2.4 (still called Gingerbread) with an adapted version of Sense

    Colour me unimpressed.
  • At 7" too, tablets do look like ridiculous phones.

    Any news on pricing?
  • Oof. £520 without contract, or 18/24 month contract at £30ish.

I suppose that's about average for a smartphone doodad. Don't know if I'll be able to upgrade mind, I'm only six months into my nexus one contract.
  • We have an Xperia Play in the office. I guess I might be allowed to mention it now. I haven't seen much of it, though, to be honest.

We had some hideous prototypes a while ago, too. They were funny.
  • So Words with Friends came out yesterday. Jacqui tried it and it looked like a half finished mess; Games missing, moves from games not there and crashing. Anyone else tried it yet?
  • Yeah, it's horrible. Intrusive ads and bugged to fuck
  • Hmm, its like they've been taken over by a hugely wealthy multi-national company with no regards for gaming standards.
  • Did a quick check of the specs for the newly announced desire s and incredible s, 1.1 gig internal storage memory, are they having a laugh? They revise a couple of popular phones and that's the best they can do with the memory?
  • I remember when this was all SD cards and spare batteries.

    Oh.
  • Errr, isn't the experia play only at PSP1 levels of POWERRRR, or have I been grossly misreading the press?

Must admit I was a bit worried with the 1Gig of app storage on the Nexus S but most apps I've downloaded have installed into the usb storage which has over 13Gig free.

  • Would be interested how much internal memory you have left to play with, there's still plenty of useful stuff that don't move to sd, usually those that run a service or have widgets and stock app updates from the marketplace install as separate apps with no option to move. Additionally on my original desire I have to try and keep 25 meg on tap incase a firmware update is pushed out. It all adds up.
  • Skifta.

    Wow.

Uses dlna to fuck over the world. Basically.

All the features of yer Airplay and that but with connectors to your Facebook and Picasa photos up in the cloud there. Easy access to your Windows PCs, at home and away too (if your upload speed is good enough).

Beautiful UI is what sets it apart from other dlna clients, as well as the cracking extras. Sitting here using the phone to orchestrate showing videos on my telly from off the PC upstairs is bizarre and great.

  • Oh and doubleTwist seems to have grown up dramatically recently. With the optional AirSync it's now completely untethered the phone. Really pretty special - it's exactly like syncing your iPhone with iTunes, just without wires and that.

And it includes streaming to Xbox360 and PS3 for fun.

  • Bollocks, forgot to switch wifi on before doing some updates and they've cost me £4.50 PAYG. D'oh!

Is there an app that can prevent me doing that in future?

  • Must....resist.....sarcastic......comment.....
  • Beluga - on Android and iPhone. Best chat app I've ever used: streamlined (Matt, you'll lick your own balls in delight), easy and does the job of organising a bunch of people really well. That's its real strength: group chat but it's also a lot like texting. The little Android notification is ace too.

  • Believe it or not, I detest instant messaging of all sorts. True.

But I love a well designed app. Dilemma.

  • It's closer to texting than chat.
  • Of course I've downloaded it. Will be interesting to compare the versions across platforms. My idea of a good time! ;)
  • Looks great on the Desire HD. Great font, easy UI, perfect notifications. Love all that.

Also - just used the new desktop version of the Market for the first time. Really neat, easy to navigate, very good at throwing up suggestions. Nice. And I fucking love the tiny nerd-thrill of buying something on the computer and it just appearing, no wires, on the phone. Yeah, the phone is about three inches away from the laptop but even so, it's cool.
  • Was reading earlier that the designer guy who did the new DoubleTwist interface has been snapped up by Apple.
  • Damn can't try Beluga on my Android as it's for 2.2 and above only.
  • Said 2.1 on the marketplace. Still, the SMS notification bug is pretty major.

It's not playing nice here, doesn't list either my Samsung TV, Sony Bluray or Humax PVR as a target making the app a little redundant, first DLNA not work issue I've had.

  • It's still a bit beta, for sure. It picked up all the players in our house but a glance at the forums suggests that it can be Billy Flakerson.
  • Yep same problems here :-(

  • Looks good may have a dabble later and see how much I can screw up my phone :)
  • Good lad!

If I was going to do it, and perhaps I should, I'd go for Cyanogen which seems worth the effort. My main issue is being able to make sure I've backed up everything before I have to wipe the phone mid-install.
  • What's the point of Amazon's new Android Marketplace? Is it just to provide a competitive alternative? If it keeps Google on their toes and improving the official marketplace, I guess that's good.
  • [ not speaking for my employer ]

I imagine it's because then Amazon are taking a chunk of the fees every time you pay for an app. They've already got a hosting infrastructure, this is another way of monetising that infrastructure.

I think it's a good thing too -- they have to compete not just on how much of a cut they take, but what they provide for that cut. Search, a web store, analytics for developers, customer service, payment methods, reviews, ratings, "Customers who bought this also bought this, this, and this", and so on.

As you say, that should drive improvements generally.

  • So a dev/publisher could choose to sell through Amazon and not bother with the official channel?
  • Yes, of course.

I imagine Amazon would have an "Amazon Market" Android app tied to your Amazon account. Searching [alternative android markets] finds several examples, and this quote from Eric

"The goal of the stores is to make money for the people who are writing software and applications. It’s not a revenue model for Google. There will be alternatives…it’s a net-win for Google."
  • Spot on, and surely correct: widen the base till it becomes near ubiquitous.
  • Could that broad base include the apps themselves? (In the case of a game) make it available in all markets but the Amazon version features bonus content.

Or make it available on Amazon first/earlier? (I'd assume that 'available at Amazon' has more of an itch than 'available on Android Marketplace'?)
  • Got to say though, I wish there was a way to do this that doesn't involve the mobile operators dropping all kinds of crap on the phone.

My brother's got an N1, his girlfriend has the Samsung Galaxy S, and they asked me to take a look over them a couple of weeks ago in the UK.

The amount of unnecessary stuff on there from Orange is astonishing. Config items in the wrong place, different apps launched by default, inconsistent UI changes...

    No reason why it couldn't.
  • I've been using CyanogenMod 7 for the past 2 weeks, firstly on the nightly builds and now on the RC1, very nice it is too. I love the screen off animation on Gingerbread and in CM7 you can set as screen on as well. A few things still need to be improved but that will come with time and the release of the official Nexus One official Gingerbread build that is due very soon I believe. Anyway, here is my current homescreen :)

  • Clean!

Do you have the notifications bar turned off?
  • I'm dying to put this on but I don't want to void my warranty.
  • Is that wallpaper animated Telboy ?
