The Tattoo Thread
  • Thought I'd start the ball rolling on a new tattoo thread with my new ink:

  • That's absolutely amazing - I didn't realise that sort of intensity of colour or precision was possible.
  • Joe, That is awesome. What was the pain factor like on the inside of the bicep?

@Koworld, there are some amazing artists around now. Even more impressive is some of the cover up work that can be done over old shit tattoos, some can even cover up scar tissue now
  • Inside of the bicep is more uncomfortable than painful. Made me feel a bit sick.
  • If I had to lay my last pound on who would be least likely to have a tattoo it would be you Russell. I'm still reckon it's crayon
  • Is it an anchor with 'mum' underneath?
  • If I were to lay my testicles on your nose, would you complain? No you wouldn't. Case closed.

I refuse to believe russ has either tattoos or biceps.
  • My right bicep is particularly well developed. All I can say is, thanks mogwins.
  • Russ has two tattoos, I've seen them. One is of a briarwood pipe and it's on his chest with the bowl formed around one nipple. The other is on his arse and it's of Michael Collins, with his bum hole forming the mouth. His 'Michael Eating a Mars Bar in Reverse' party trick goes down a treat at family gatherings in his adopted homeland :)

  • Inside bicep was, as my kids would say, "a bit hurty". Noticeably more than the outside but still easily bearable once you get used to it.

I did a lot of research beforehand to find the right artist, she has done some award winning colour work in the past and I booked a few months in advance.
  • How did you decide on the design?
  • Freemans catalogue.
  • But they don't fall open at that page...
  • How did you decide on the design?

Discussed a few ideas, mixed a cube up myself and took some photos. I liked the idea that the mix had been done by me rather than using stock pictures found online. The tattooist suggested the blue wisps around the edge to make it "pop" out a bit more.
  • The shading on the colours is very good - I didn't realise you could gradient so finely
  • Joe you look like Steve O of Jackass fame.
  • Thanks TT :P

Who was it that did it if you don't mind me asking?
  • That is some impressive ink you got Joe, I'm with Chr$ on this one, who did the ink??
  • It was Hazel at Design 4 Life Tattoo in Liverpool. Her colour work is incredible - check out her gallery on the website. The Killing Joke one is stunning.
  • Hmm I think next time I plan to get ink done a journey to Liverpool will be in order... I'll just tell the missus I fancy seeing some place new =p
  • TROMAIN TRAVEL!
  • One of my friends used to be in the Army and one of his army mates got a tattoo while on a tour of duty. By all accounts he was a bit pissed up when he got his "Death Or Or Glory" tattoo done.
  • Was the tattooist pissed as well?
  • Perhaps the tattooist had a mild stutter.
  • So, after 4 years of umming and ahhing I have finally bitten the bullet and booked an appointment to get another tattoo done.

Pics will follow, although I'm expecting it to be painful, inside bicep and all.....
  • No full back tattoo of Westlife then?
  • Hehe, I see why you asked about the inside bicep now :) When are you booked in?

In other news, Last month I finally booked a date and stuck a deposit down to start work on my Godzilla sleeve. Got a five hour slot booked for 3rd June, looking forward to it :)
  • Five hours!! Bloody hell. Do you read or listen to music while it's being done? Or is the pain enough to keep you entertained?
  • Just chat I guess. They do have music on though. My last one was 2 hours and that was fine. Organising child care, travel etc is such a pain that I may as well book in for a decent session. Plus if it's going to end up covering my whole arm I want to get a good chunk done to start with.
  • @JoeTeach I'm booked in on the 4th May, booked the afternoon off work, if I hadn't done that I'd have been waiting months for a Saturday appointment.

I think they've pencilled me in for 2 hours for this one, my shoulder and top of my left arm took 6 hours, but they did it in two sessions, a week apart, which was a bit of a bugger from a healing point of view

  • Hopefully it's not a warm day... I had my right calf and my shoulders done the same day in the middle of a heatwave. Oooo that was such a mistake, I wasn't even fat then and I really suffered as I sweated at night. Tattoo's took about four hours as well so I wasn't a happy bunny.

Even less so when Sue hated the back one, reckoned it looked like a demon staring at her.
  • Hadn't thought of that - should be fun for five hours if it's that hot! Also I wonder if an arm covered with monsters will give Jane nightmares?!

  • Well, the moment of truth has arrived! Designed discussed with the artist, just waiting to be called through
  • Be interested to see what you get done.

I'm actually in the process of coming up with the design for my next one. I've been a gamer for nigh-on 30 years now and it's certainly a big part of my life and has contributed not only to my career but a lot else in my life as well.

I'm therefore trying to come up with a retro-gaming-themed design - but it's a big decision because i've got such a huge history of gaming to choose from. If anyone has any sources of inspiration or suggestions i'd love to hear them.
  • Get Horace going skiing down your back
  • ;) That's probably around the era i'm looking at tbh. But then i'm torn because anything truly retro is most likely going to end up being 'pixel-art' based.

    Decisions decisions.
  • Fucking stings like a bastard, I don't remember it being like this!!

Once it's settled down I'll post a pic. The tattooist was a quality guy, it didn't seem like it took an hour and a half, just chatting and listening to music

Or your, ahem, front. Get him going up the ski jump when you get excited?

  • A cock and balls Q*bert tattoo might work
  • Worried this might be a bit hipster, but here it is

    image
  • Is that Biffa Bacons thumb in the bottom left?
  • Wow, the colours in that are great.
  • Is that the actual ink?

I expected it to look a bit red/scabby/weepy, but that looks healed. :-)
  • Bah, I can't keep up the charade any longer ;)

That was just one of the first hits from a google search for "anchor tattoos"

This is what I've had done today:

    image

The colours are much more vivid, but the iPhone camera isn't picking them up too well. As it heals, the yellow in particular will lose that "old banana skin" look too

And @PVB, since taking the cling film off and washing the plasma and gunk off it's started to weep a little bit, but nothing too bad!

  • Hah! :-)

I did wonder how the Hell they'd done it. ;-)

Ha, I remember thinking exactly the same as soon as he started on my back.... it had been 10 years since my last one and I really didn't remember it hurting like that. Also the vast amount of ink that came back out, easily ruined 4 tee shirts.

Still fancy one on my thigh tho....
  • Oh definitely, I remembered the amount that leeches out, so I made sure I was wearing a cheap shirt

I got the ultimatum that "this is the last one" from the good lady last night, so I thought I'd go to town with it!

  • Cracking looking tat tho chap.... those colours are ace.

    :)
