Demon's Souls can jump up my arse
  • I only did that once on the cliffs at the back in 4-1. I was locked onto a gold skelly and a manta flew over, my lock changed to the manta and I rolled in the opposite direction from where I was pointing half a second ago and went straight over.

Was bloody careful about lock on on the cliffs after that ;-)
  • This and Uncharted 2 are my games of this generation.
  • I think 4-2 is the hardest level in the game. I typically go 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, then it depends on what I feel like/how my character is set up. With my Battlemage I did them in order, with my BBS character I did them in reverse.
  • I thought 4-2 was ok once I got the silver shield. I just legged it down the stairs and out the gate in the second section. The bit with the slugs was a bit freaky afterwards - I kept expecting something nasty to jump out.
  • You round a corner in 4-2, look down a very narrow clifftop path with three silver skeletons waiting at the point it widens, and can't help but groan.
  • yeah - those fuckers are fast. I lured them out one at a time and fought them on the platform above. Warding helps a lot too if you have it.
  • I did the same, but getting up that ledge before the first hit comes in is dicey.
  • In your face, Flamelurker.

Piece of piss. Got him first time. It helped a bit that he got stuck on some scenery, but he was already pretty knackered by then.
  • Nice one! First time is impressive, I had a few goes at that fucker.
  • I also like the way that everyone's journey is quite different and that there is genuine well wishing for all who give it a go.
  • BTW, those three skellies on 4-2, you can hit the first one with a missile weapon and he'll roll straight off the cliff trying to get to you. Always good for a belly laugh.

I then usually draw out the second one with projectile attacks and the thief ring. The third one is usually the toughest.

As for the assassins, when they laugh, that means that they're behind you and about to backstab you. So when you hear it, roll out of the way and attack where you "know" them to be. Either that or run like buggery.
  • Fucking yes!

    Allant is down.
  • Well done Scotty. Finished it yet?
  • Allant was as everyone says - just a matter of learning his moves and taking your time. He's still a cheap bastard tho.

    The ending was, odd.

I started a new game and immediately got PWWT so went down and fought Miralda, picked up the brushwood set and died trying to get the goody on the beam. Went back in, grabbed my soul (about 120,000 souls!) and ran back to the nexus. I'll get it later ;-)
  • Dipped in for half an hour last night, post football, and managed to find the Thief Ring - although it was pretty random that at one given point in an otherwise identical low wall I was able to climb over.

Then I polished of Phalanx at the first time of asking - soul arrow renders him utterly toothless. And man, do you get a good amount of shards from those shield twats!

Had a quick peak at 1-2, hit some dogs, and got toasted by the dragon again. Looking forward to twatting him in due course.

Also, I had a cut scene at the Nexus which invited me to climb to the top of the chamber. When I got there, I found a door which did nothing. There was a message saying 'obtaining information' or something similar. Was I supposed to hang around? None of the other archstones have opened either.
  • Well done matey.

You need to speak to the little Buddah dude about half way up on one of the terraces. He should be easy to spot as he has candles around him. Once you speak to him, the other stones will open up and you can speak to the maiden in black to level up.

Have you got the cling ring too? Essential that is.

  • Cling ring? I've got four I think. One that enables my MP to rise slightly. One that raises my HP in soul form. Then there is the thief ring and something that referenced a resistance to gashes? i've not really studied them to be honest - I have the first two equipped.

Ah right - so I actually need to manually level up. Best do that pronto.
  • Yup.

The cling ring is the one that raises your max hp in soul form. That and the thief ring are pretty much essential I'd say. The mp regen one is useful but the bad guys won't attack you if they can't see you - try putting on the thief ring and sneaking round the bad guys to stab them in the back ;-)

And souls are used to level up and to buy stuff, you should have a pile of them after killing phalanx. Don't lose them ;-)

  • Good advice mate.

And bugger - no idea how many souls I lost when I was killed by the dragon - but I do know I have a fuck of a long way along the battlements to get them back! When I killed Phalanx, did I pick up his demon soul? And will I have dropped it?
  • You get it when you first touch the new archstone that gets created when the demon dies. You won't have dropped it. I'd stash it with Thomas for now tho, those souls are useful.

How far up did you get with the dragon? If he roasted you on the way up then there's a good chance they will be at the start of the walkway - they get dumped ten seconds back from where you were when you died.

You can also use the "unknown warrior" souls any time you want. Just go into your inventory, select one and choose Use from the menu. If you have a few of them, you can equip them in a slot to use them quicker. They can be useful for a top-up to level up, or you can keep them for emergency repairs before you try to recover your bloodstain if you get badly fucked up in a level.
  • Ah right. So you don't cash in demon souls to level up? It is just the general souls that you need?

I've cashed in quite a few of those unknown warrior souls - think I used them to upgrade my weapons. And the souls I dropped - well I got past the first encounter with the dragon, and then went underground to get past the second expanse of battlements. I was then killed 3/4 the way across the third - I was pegged by an archer, and while I was staggered, I was toasted.
  • Ah.

You might get lucky if you are careful - they should still be in the middle tower then ;-)
  • I'll have the thief ring equipped as well, of course.
  • And then once I have rescued the souls, I had better get back to the Nexus to do some levelling. I will be mighty fucked off if I do perish along the way. That said, I am pretty sure I didn't have many souls when I died - no more than 4,000.

So, back to my original question - what are demon's souls used for? Can you cash them in for many souls, like those of the unknown warriors?
  • You can, but they are more usefully used to make special weapons and spells.

That link gogs posted won't make too much sense yet but it will show you what you can make with each soul, and who does it.

  • Ok - special weapons and spells they shall be saved for. Fuck - it would be very easy to piss away opportunities to do cool stuff in this game.
  • I seem to find that I always die really cheaply - usually against the first enemy - if I've left a big stash of souls on the ground somewhere further into the level. It's quite annoying.

I started the Shrine of Storms (4-1) last night. It feels like it's doable at my current level - I can mash the early skellys with one hit of the Great Club if I time it right - but I keep cocking up on the narrow ledge.

It is one of those games where I feel I have to keep checking the wiki to make sure I'm not missing stuff. It's hard to balance that against trying not to spoiler things. I've just had a glance at the map/walkthrough of 4-1, having had a go at it without peeking. I don't seem to have missed anything serious.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as you aren't in pure white or pure black world, you can always come back for stuff later. Just don't try to pick something up then leave it because you can't lift it - it will be gone when you reload the world. You should have the ring from Thomas that gives you 1.5x weight limit, stick that on and head back to the nexus with whatever loot you have.

Remember to dump stones with Thomas too - you can still use them for upgrading even though he's got them. Doesn't work with Demon's souls or upgrade items tho, you need to be carrying those to upgrade with them.
  • I'm sitting reading in the canteen at work and there's a guy nearby with a ringtone that is just a bell going "ting ting". I keep thinking "fuck, mindflayer"

    ;-)
  • That maneater is a bit of a prick. I killed him dead for his troubles.
  • That showed him. Now go see to the old Monk.
  • New monster in Dark Souls - dual golf-club wielding berserker..

    image
  • I know the economy is bad, but would you not buy the lad some trousers? ;)
  • We had to take them off because they were soaking wet after him playing in a paddling pool. There was more water in his wellies than the pool ;-)
  • All done. Found Allant to be a cheap bastard, so I cheapened him back with poison cloud. I'll probably just work through 1-1 for my NG+. I can kill Ostrava and find out what this Old King Doran is all about. Was thinking of going after the Northern Regalia, but that would involve working right the way through to Flamelurker again.

For Dark Soul's I'll be going down the hardy fighter route, I think. This time round I had a nice balance between magic and melee with spears.
  • Nice going.

    Allant was a cunt.
  • I like to think I out-cunted him, standing on the steps while the poison wore him down, and turning back to the PC to watch youtube videos to pass the time.

The blue dragon also made even getting to him a cunt, so overall 1-4 was a bit cuntish.
  • yeah. I was tempted to twat him with arrows from the door but I toughed it out and took him down with soul ray instead. Took me a good few goes tho.

    Fuck melee-ing the cunt tho.
  • RexxFiend said:

That's how I did him. That's because I is well 'ard though innit.
  • Well, you're so fat he just bounced off you, innit?
  • I took down my 6th and 7th bosses over the weekend (4-1 and 5-1). Not even half way yet. And they've mostly been the easy ones, and I still had to "cheat" a couple.

I also made myself a Meat Cleaver, and then found I needed 16 Faith to use it. I've only got 10. That feeble Leechmonger only got me enough souls for 1 upgrade, too.

So, I'm briefly back in human form and trying to decide where to go next, again.
  • I would say do 4-2 because 4-3 is great for grinding soul levels but you really need an item from 5-3 for 4-2 or it's much harder.

5-2 is a pain in the arse. It's a bit easier if you use leechmonger's soul to get the cure miracle, otherwise you'll go through a ton of lotuses.
  • If you have something that regains health (Adjudicator Shield or Regen ring), it makes 5-2 much easier. Poison wears of after a minute or two.

RexxFiend said: you really need an item from 5-3 for 4-2 or it's much harder.

Dark Silver Shield? Not essential I'd say.

  • Not essential, but very useful.
  • I think I'm okay with poison. I'm wearing the black leather, and have the poison resistance ring available. I was thinking of going for 5-2 because it sounds annoying and I'd like to get it out of the way.

I don't think I can trade souls for Miracles yet. I need Saint Urbain, who is in 4-2, I believe.
  • He is, but he's near the start, before the really nasty bit that you need the silver shield for.
  • Well, I had no joy at all with 5-2, so I went to 4-2 instead, and after many struggles with those reapers, finished it off and beat Old Hero last night. Not such a tough boss fight, and I ended up with a nice haul of souls for upgrades.

Had another crack at 5-2 today. Still found it quite annoying, dying too cheaply where I should know better, so I gave up and went to 3-2 instead. Spooky, but at least I feel like I'm getting somewhere.
  • 5-2 is a complete cunt. If you know where to go it's a little bit easier but not much. The best way to deal with the big fuckers with clubs is just to avoid them once you know where they are. You can snipe them but the level is so fucking dark it can be hard to pick them out far enough away that you can snipe them without them spotting you.

4-3 should be doable if you have any ranged magic or a good bow, otherwise you'll need to sprint right down to the far end to get the nice sword. You do run the gauntlet of about 20 mantas tho, so I'd advise against it.

3-2 is pretty good. Oodles of atmosphere and pretty straightforward as long as you are cautious. I think I did that one in only about two goes, which I can't say for any of the others (apart from Archdemon fights, False Idol and Storm king I did first time, but they don't count as they aren't really levels I'd say).

edit - when I say do, I mean open up the shortcut. The boss fight took me a few shots ;-)
