Demon's Souls can jump up my arse
  • make sure you close the curtains. Or turn the brightness up. The Tower of Latria and the Valley of defilement are pretty much impossible to play during the day I found.

You'll be on the first level all day tho, so I guess it's not too much of an issue today ;-)
  • When you die and leave a blood stain behind, will it still be there after you exit the game?
  • Yup. Unless you die again - you can only have one active bloodstain but you can go back whenever you want, even go into another level, and as long as you don't die it will still be there with all your souls.

How are you getting on, you died then?
  • It was merely a hypothetical question. Just met some Boletaria dude in golden armour. Nice chap
  • Yeah - he's a good guy. Have a good look around the area where you met him.
  • I should probably leave the two dragons alone though. Quite unsociable.
  • Yeah - don't play well with others those two.
  • Also, should I feel guilty for spamming the underlings with soul arrows? Weapon fighting just seems too risky!
  • Hell no - whatever works mate. The game is hard enough without imposing arbitrary restrictions on your playstyle. There's plenty time to learn how to melee once you get a better weapon and armour and level up a bit.

Ah yes. Good call on two counts!
  • That ring and one other (which you also get in 1-1) you'll have on for pretty much the whole game. You get plenty other rings which can be useful but these two are just too useful to do without.
  • I meant the key that I missed and some shards. I did find a reduced HP damage one at some stage. I think the key gets me through the door after the guy with the lance. But having killed him easily when exploring I am now finding that he finishes me off in seconds.

Yep, I pretty much wear those two all the time.

  • That red-eye knight is a bugger. I'd leave him for now as there's nothing there that's of any use just now.

If you got the key then that means the guy is dead which is a bit of a shame as he gives you some decent loot later. Nothing game changing tho.
  • I think that the red-eye knight takes 2 soul arrows while defending (less damage) and the third breaks his guard an leave an opening for about 2-3 shots with full damage. Use the catapults to keep the distance between you and him.

Did you check out the ledge he was on too? If you come down the stairs from the blue knight, instead of going straight on to the fecker with the explodey barrels, you drop down the far edge onto the raised platform, there's a very nice goodie in there that you don't want to be without.
  • Not sure where you mean mate. I have now killed lance man again and opened the door. The old king inside rather kicked my arse.
  • yeah - leave him for now.

At the top of the walkway where you turn to go get the red knight, there's a blue knight in front of what was a fog gate. Go through the gate and down the stairs, then keep to the right and walk over the little ledge there to drop onto the raised area below.
  • I've been completing the Tower of Latria for the last few hours. This is basically the best game ever, isn't it? Nothing superfluous, story and atmosphere conveyed through experiencing them rather than endless awful exposition (although it has it's share of dodgy voice acting), great locations, demanding tactical play, meaningful impact to the decisions you make on stats and equipment, big-ass bad guys... has it all really!

Does Biorr do anything? I've rescued him and he just seems to sit there bitching about upholding the kings good name.

  • Biorr is very useful in one fight and I think has some benefit in another. You can also contrive to get him killed (or kill him yourself if you are feeling naughty) to get some bad-ass armour. You need to have endurance of about 99 to wear the stuff tho - it's stupidly heavy.

Have you done the Valley yet? Stunningly evocative that, especially the archdemon.

edit - watch out for Yurt in 3-2 as well, you can set him free but keep an eye on him, he's trouble that one ;-)

  • Grrr wish I could play this the way you're talking about it. No point now with Dark coming out soon.
  • System seller this one matey - it's pretty much the reason I bought a PS3. Stunning game.

I've certainly got my money's worth out of the game, we'll have to wait and see if the same applies to the PS3 ;-)
  • I'm finding that playing an actual game on my PS3 is getting in the way of my bluray watching.
  • When I finished today I had opened the gate to the boss of 1-1, and I really like the way that you open up the arena through exploration. It is a stunning game, but it is as advertised - not something I will have the time to devote to. Any game where grinding away at the vertical learning curve is the only way forward is not for a man with around three hours per week gaming time. Can't wait to step back in, but there is no prospect I will get mire than a level or two in.
  • Hmm, I've completed 1-3, but at no point did Ostrava turn up in need of rescue. I've lost that key now, haven't I?
  • That's kind of how I am with gaming - I get a couple of hours a night if I'm lucky but I'm happy just grinding away at this. It was slow going at first but it gets to the point where you can complete a level in a couple of hours so you can knock out a boss a night.

The last boss is giving me some trouble tho - I'm going to have another pop at him now. I may be back cursing the fucker soon..

You should have met him just at the bit when you open up the gate. Did you meet him in 1-2?

It's not a great loss - demonbrandt doesn't seem to be that powerful (I must be close to pure white character by now) and you can't enchant it.

Link doesn't work for some reason but that is pretty handy. There's a similar chart on the wiki but that one seems to have a bit more info in it.

edit - link doesn't work because they don't allow hotlinking. Naughty ;-)

    Changed to clicky link here

  • Decided I want second chance so I need to grind to get faith up so I can get the second slot for it. With the ring of avarice equipped I'm pulling in 20,000 souls for 5 mins work each time I clear out all the mantas at the Storm King's stone. I was using the sword because of TEH Awesome but it's easier to use soul ray (I do like that sword tho, it's a shame teh awesome only works in 4-3 tho, and it's made of glass).
  • It does however have a bit of knockback when you hit somebody -- a friend of mine was having quite a bit of fun invading 3-2 with it.
  • mother-fucker. I had that cunt Allant down to a sliver of health and he killed me. I had second chance but didn't realise it had gone (it may actually have gone at the fog gate, I'll need to check that next time - I think fog gates might strip any buffs you might have). I just took it easy and tried to stay out of the way of his attacks and attack him whenever he did the explodey attack. Seemed to go pretty well but I got exited or cocky or something, I dunno but I didn't heal quickly enough and he smacked me dead right at the end.

I'll have him next time tho - I have the measure of the cheap cunt now..

and invading 3-2 with stormy, that's just evil ;-)
  • Is there any way to grind, without having to run all the way back to the beginning to warp back to the Nexus? Do you get a power later on that enables you to warp from any point?
  • You can use something called a shard of archstone which will return you to the nexus but you don't get them till later and they cost 5k each so you really need to have a good haul before it's worth it.

There is a miracle you can get later called evacuate which does the same job.

I find what you can do is run between archstones to grind once you get further on in a level. 4-1 and 4-2 are good for this. I've also heard of a drastic technique of just suiciding after a grind session then coming back for your souls after running the same grind (if that makes sense). Bit risky that one tho.

  • Ah yes - double yer money!

Also, and I'm just full o questions - have most people tended to flit around 1-1; 2-1; 3-1 etc before moving to 1-2, 2-2?

I guess what I'm driving at is how the difficulty ramps up? Or is it uneven?
  • okay just ordered this from the hut for £15 lets see how far a PS3 controller can fly
  • It's a matter of preference really. Most people do 1-1, hit 1-2, brick it, then go and do 2-1 instead. 2-2 is prized because you can use the demon from that world to craft unique weapons. Although ask gogs how easy he is to beat ;-)

Difficulty is about the same I guess, they all have unique challenges that you aren't going to be prepared for until you've tried them, but that's part of the fun of the game - figuring out how to get past a previously unpassable area. Grinding helps but it isn't really necessary (and is no real substitute for skill I'm afraid - people can complete this game without levelling at all, the freaks).

I'd avoid 3 and 4 until you are a little better equipped tho. 5 is doable at a lower level, although you'll need some stout trousers ;-)

(you count from the left to the right, clockwise. So the one at the top is 3 and the one at the far right is 5).

yeah - I'd get some cushions round the telly ;-)
  • I must confess that I've woken up today and this is under my skin. Might have a chance to put in a few minutes on Thursday, but otherwise it will have to wait until after I do the three peaks.
  • It does get its hooks into you, doesn't it?

Avoid world 4 early on as the skeletons are hardy bastards. I did 5-1 at a low level - only my third boss fight I think. Very evocative world. You can practically smell it while playing.

  • Have you done the 5-3 archdemon yet gogs?
  • When I finished today I had opened the gate to the boss of 1-1, and I really like the way that you open up the arena through exploration. I'm finding shortish sessions work quite well. I tend to want a longer run if I'm exploring a new level, but a lot of the time I'm just trying to move on a bit from where I last died, which can be fairly quick. And if you don't make any progress, you get fed up of it quite quickly too. :)
  • RexxFiend said:

No. Only world 2 complete. Spent yesterday evening on 1-4 and 4-2, both hard as nails as the world tendency has moved away from white. Managed to leave behind 27000 souls in 4-2 as something with claws appeared from thin air and did me with one hit.

  • yeah - those feckers are nasty. I you hear female giggling, run like feck!
  • So the tendency thing - essentially the game's difficulty level may change depending on what is going on around you - both in your game and in others'?
  • yeah, don't sweat it tho, unless you are playing at halloween or christmas (they have various "events" where this changes) it tends to stay at slightly white when you are online. This means baddies are slightly easier but don't drop as much souls or loot, and certain NPC's don't appear.
  • And those ghostly white figures are other people playing the game at the same time? I ask because I could swear I saw Gogs at one stage trying to straddle a corpse...;)
  • yeah, that'd be him ;-)

the bloodstains are interesting too - if you activate them they'll show you how someone died. It can sometimes clue you in that there's something nasty round the corner.
  • You get a good laugh from numpties rolling off cliff edges too.

Howdy, Stranger!
