I tried to get back into running early last year, but had some problems with old foot and knee injuries that made it a struggle once the distance built up, so packed it in. I've recently joined the gym just to keep a decent level of fitness, and got myself a personal trainer to set me up a fitness program which will hopefully get my body in a better shape to start running on the roads again.

It's only been a couple of weeks, but I'm starting to feel the difference. I've put on about half a stone in weight, and some of my shirts are starting to get a bit tight around the chest - the small Rumpus ones barely go on now. The big difference has been the weekly squash game with the chaps from work; I'm covering more ground and not getting as tired. Still not winning much, but the games are much closer.

Rubbishly though, I seem to have developed some weird sleep disorder, so where I'd expect to have more sleep with exercising more, I'm finding I'm more awake and struggling to get more than five hours sleep a night. Although my education is probably fantastically out of date by now.

Fortunately it seems that there are a lot of very sophisticated games middleware systems nowadays to take care of the mundane bits. Unfortunately I have no idea what's good and affordable. All I've looked at (and only cursorily at that -- still working for pay!) is Unity, and it's intriguing at least. Any of you have any experience to share?

Trying to do something in 3D with a bit of physics, so anything that takes care of boring stuff like lighting and collision detection (and preferably manage a fair number of physics objects) would be greatly appreciated. The game hinges on a simply constructed but very non-static environment, so flexibility is good. Mostly because I wanted to post about model-making and in particular 'Decal Soft'.

Fuck me - I have just witnessed magic. Doing an F1 car that includes great sheets of carbon-fibre decals that are supposed to wrap around tiny components, spars, lumps, bumps and gullies. I'd put a load of these sheets on and it looked utter shite.

Painted on a thin lick of Decal Soft. Then literally as you watch the decal forms and wraps itself around the components, very, very weird to watch. At first it looks like Ulrika Johnson's neck muscles but then dries absolutely flat.

Why had nobody told me of this magical potion before?
