Black
Every Explosion in Black is a big-cocked visceral pleasure – but even then the game happily trumps itself constantly. When you blow something up in a warehouse and see a baddie go straight-up in the air and out through a man-shaped hole in a skylight… well, that’s life completed is that.
Shadow of the Colossus
Not so much an explosion as a climactic finality – the crashing to the ground of each Colossus is achingly sad and really quite special.
Chromehounds
There's something incredibly satisfying about howitzering a little spindly bastard robot to death from halfway up a neighbouring mountain.
Neon Wars
The best smart-bomb in gaming history – the weird jagged thing that spits out precise death in a neat laser line from your ship to every enemy in sight and does so for a few extra seconds after the initial alien genocide. Lovely.

Kickin' arse. Every nerd’s dream.
Marcus Fenix (Gears of War)
Yes he's a grunty old stereotype but he is an absolutely perfectly realised grunty old stereotype and we love him.
Makoto (Enchanted Arms)
Gayer than a greased-up Mario and played to comic-stereotype perfection
Agent47 (Hitman: Blood Money)
Never says a word. Huge sense of character though. It’s all in the hips.
Best polygon in a supporting wall
Big chunk of random road - PGR3
We loved the sheer cheek of that polygon deciding to detach itself from the photo-realistic environments it was placed within and just go wild all over the screen. It’s only funny because we’re geeks and because we like to see two years work and millions of pounds investment go to shit in the most random ways. We’re like that.
Big fucking Rocks - Gears of War
It’s ace how these stop bullets going in our heads and that.
Weak-spot Indicator – Shadow of the Colossus
We’ve spent three days of gloriously desolate horse-wandering and shit-us but are we glad to finally have a proper goal.
The space between the ball and the headers’ head – FIFA2007 (360 version)
FIFA2007 is great. We genuinely love this version and we love it all the more when the replay function proves that actual physics are entirely unnecessary in a footie game. See that soccerist ball fly from the air molecules four inches from Mr Spudhead’s face! Great.
