soul…

So, what makes videogames special?

We don’t think it’s a question you can answer under laboratory conditions. You can’t chuck a modish licensing deal and a cutting-edge rendering engine thingy into a test-tube and distill… the very essence… of FUN ITSELF – guaranteed, every time.

It’s the gamer’s experience of the game that matters, isn’t it? Eh? It’s the personal stuff –fleeting emotional connections, mini-triumphs, spontaneous multiplayer magic, look, feel…

It’s just the right sound for the job, a cute little graphical twitch, the joy of a perfectly pitched shock or a well-crafted set-piece.

Sometimes it’s just that intangible, zoned-in feeling that belongs to a single place and time and can never be completely recreated.

That’s what makes videogames special.

A videogame being made. Recently.

So, after the recent piracy and Spectrum/C64 ding-dongs, we thought it was time for a celebration. Y’know – of ‘our thing’. A little ‘Ode To Videogaming Joy’, if you really do fucking insist.

50 Great Videogame Moments , then. All as individual and personal as it gets – but we do hope you find yourself nodding and grinning and going: “Yes! Yes! YES!”. Like out of Tempest 2000.

seek…

Y’know what? We’ve still found it in our hearts to chuck a rhino-flooring dose of original videogaming spirit, your way…

Nearly ready…

Massive great stinking thanks to the YakYak community for the help with the 50 Videogame Moments feature. We love you very very lots, indeed. Thanks also to Nintendo for wearing suits during their E3 presentation, which was about videogames - which are about entertainment and emotion.

Next Week: How to build your very own arcade – for absolutely no money.
