Most animals hibernate for the winter. Animals
aren’t stupid – it’s cold, there’s not
much food around, it’s cold, it’s wet, and did I mention
that it was cold?
And yet, many people will soon be swapping the
cold and dreary British climate for some of the more expensive
(but equally cold and dreary) parts of Europe for their annual
winter holidays. A chance to strap your feet onto two planks of
shaped wood and throw yourself down a mountain with gleeful abandon.
Fun.
Perhaps the annual release of a fresh crop of
winter sports titles appeals to our hibernatory instincts –
all the fun of the snow, but in the warm and with very little
chance of being eaten by a passing yeti. But have things really
changed all that much since Horace went skiing? Well, we’ve
moved from two planks to one for starters, but is it still a case
of move fast, get through the gates and try not to crash into
